ROLLER PAINTING MY VAN ?

Postby carlburt78 » Fri Jun 05, 2020 8:12 pm

Hi I have a mk7 2008 Transit that I use for courier work , I have just spent some time sorting the rust bubbles ect and bought some Frozen white spray as this is what the van had stamped under the bonnet , I think the previous owner repeated the van as the colour is not matching the panels , to be honest the paintwork is rather dull and scratched and could do with a makeover, I dont really want to pay out more than the Van's worth on a respray and was wandering if a roller paint job is any good as I've heard of it being done before but never seen one, have any of you guys ever done this ? Foes the finish look ok ? What paint is best to use ? Many thanks Carl

I've rollered a few cheapo motors with good results and a definite improvement on what they were before, but If you roller use a mini roller and make sure you get good quality rollers and not cheap ones, they aren't that expensive really and it makes the difference between a good job or not, I don't think the paint matters too much, I've used all sorts.
But the prep is the key, a badly prepped surface will never look good whether sprayed or rollered.

Thanks for the advice , I love my van but she really needs a makeover, you say any paint , but I assume it has to be paint specifically for metal ? My van is white so will probably want to keep it white

Don't use them shitty cheap foam rollers they'll just put air bubbles in the paint, Toolstation do some pro Dec ice fusion ones that are good or Wickes do some orange flock mini roller sleeves

The bus companies roller paint the busses in company colours, rustolium do some good paint, it's not cheap though, as said the finish all depends on the preparation.

For the cutting in use a good quality brush

At work they started putting some lacquer in the top coat to give it a shine and stop it getting dull after a week or so .
They brush paint/roller them so they don’t have to have all the health and safety rules that spraying has when they get a new bus it’s sprayed by the manufacturer some 06 plate ones are still on original paint but the hand painted ones need doing regularly.

I've only really used NATO paint but i found the long hair type rollers left a better finnish than the foam ones? left a smoother surface and less bubbles, also dont do it on a hot day, the paint needs time to settle and flow before it drys, also dont do it on a cold day  warm day in the shade i found best or indoors in controled sun and heat if possable ?the bonnet on my ambulance was done in direct sun and it's very streaky, you can see the roller lines as it dried too quick to allow the paint to flow into each roller run.
P100 came out fine, the ambulance is stripey cos it was painted in the sun and dried to quickly
