fuel cap & stereo speaker

Postby SSSam » Thu Sep 20, 2007 1:54 pm

Hey there, two separate and unrelated questions.

I reasonably recently purchased a semi-high roof R reg T4 smiley van and it's been running really nicely. Engine and mechanically it's fine, but a few body things are starting to go awry...

First thing is that the fuel cap had been problematic for a while, and last week it finally exploded. The central lock barrel pulled out of the cap housing and then all the bits came out one by one. Fixable or do I need a new cap and therefore lock, key etc?

Secondly the stereo it came with had all sorts of issues, buttons broken etc, so I replaced it with a 4000 series Ford stereo - slipped straight in no problems. Now this has brought out problems with the speakers, which seem to be basically blown. I don't need anything fancy or especially loud, just want to be able to hear the radio without cracks and rattles. How hard is it going to be to remove door panels and fit some new speakers and what sort of speakers am I likely to need?

Many thanks for any help!

Oh, I dunno, get confused with all the T's... It's a 98 model with the smile shaped grille anyhow... Just also realised I probably posted this in the wrong place, apologies.

Thanks for any help nonetheless.

It's just clicked you mean T as in Type, Smiley is Mark 5.

Just been talking to a friend who's bought a T4 Transporter, probably the source of my confusion - yes, it's a mk. 5 smiley.

Any help on the fuel cap?

Can't help on the fuel cap, sorry. Speakers in the door are 8 inch elliptical (oval) on my '95.
Door panel comes off in about 2/3 minutes, just follow your nose for the screw locations.

You'll need Phillips screwdriver and Allen key for the door pocket and door pull (carefully prise centre out to reveal screws behind)
