2013 Cargo Anchor Points Mod

Postby dcheming » Mon May 03, 2021 3:01 am

I bought a 2013 Transit Connect about 2 years ago and I often move large objects in the rear cargo area. I prefer to secure things with ratchet straps and there are very few places to anchor them in these vans. The two D-rings in the rear are useful of course, but there's nothing really anywhere else. Up front I've been anchoring to the seat frames which is awkward. Recently I decided to do something about this and installed a bunch of nice stainless steel lifting eye bolts in the various threaded insert locations. All of the larger threadserts in the cargo area are M10-1.5 thread, including the rear D-rings. I wanted to share some pics of this mod because it's been a huge quality of life upgrade so far.

For the front lift eye I installed threadserts in the lowest hexagon hole in the B Pillars. I've read that Ford offers a specific part for this that doesn't need a special install tool, but I just went with generic M6-1.0 threadserts that fit the 9mm hexagon hole. I found some on Amazon made by LBY that were only $11 for 100 pieces: https://www.amazon.com/LBY-Carbon-Half- ... 078T7BVLT/

I just used a M6 screw, some washers, an Allen key, and a deep offset wrench to install:

Then I carefully measured and drilled a 0.75" (19mm) hole in the plastic cover using a step drill bit:

This gives just enough room for the lift eye:
