hey, m only new here, i own a workshop in sydney australia, i've just started doing a heap of work on transits, at the present moment i'm fitting a ford 9inch into a swb low roof 98 model, i know ur looking for a cheaper alternative, and so was my customer, but through investigation, found that this one is ending up the cheapest, by the time you've adapted braking systems etc, it all starts to get pricey, if you need any info, happy to help. p.s. investigate 9inch's from f100 f150 as they are the right width, do not need to be chopped...
don't listen to what everyone else says son, transits are cool.

if only i could work on transits all day.

i think i'll end up going with a 9" ive still got a few problems to sort 1st, as over here 9" are not exactly cheep or easly available :| i need to be sure of the ratio i want. ive only done 350 miles in my van so i'm not 100% sure yet! the only 9"s ive seen so far have had very "relaxed" ratios

Hi Guys

New forum member here from Australia.
What better way to make an impression than to revive a thread from 2005 :D

I'm wondering whether Luke ever found an appropriate non-transit rear axle/diff?

I've got a 96 high roof LWB that I'm converting into a camper and am well over the open diff and 6 x 180 PCD.
My diff measures ~1838 mm face to face with drums.

I'm looking for a non-transit, limited slip, and around 4.5:1 rear diff whats wide enough that I could make it work with different offset wheels and/or spacers.

I'm in a similar position to where Luke was nearly 15 years ago lol.

Hi Eli, about 15 years ago i fitted a pontiac firebird rear axcle off of a 1999 one,
it has what i think they call a spinner axcle which is like an lsd but without the
clutches ? i had to weld new bracketts to carry the shock absorbers & fit to the
leaf springs, it is also equiped with discs & handbrake in disc, it is i believe to
be 3.2 ratio, also i fitted 15 inch rear wheels & 235 x 70 x 15 tyres,commercial
ones of course, it pulls about 60 mph at 2 thousand 500 revs can't be sure as i
hav'nt driven it lately, also apart from the cable operated handbrake i fitted a
hydraulic one as well, good luck with your conversion, happy Transiteering.
ps will post some pics.
