There are a number of smaller neater boxes available, possibly in diecast aluminium, that would give strength and still look good.
I will have a look around this weekend and see what I can find but cannot seem to get anything smaller so may have to split the switches and mount some in the dash.

This is where it gets silly because the box is auto but has an electric actuator on it and no gear lever

but it has a console over it so this could possibly be used for mounting a few buttons
