Switch Panel For Gearbox

Postby andykay » Wed Feb 20, 2008 6:55 pm

I have a problem in that my gearbox, electric handbrake and keyless ignition are all mounted in a box which is bolted to the drivers door :? which is a pain to use as my brakes are also on the right so holding the brake lever and changing gear or applying the handbrake is a nightmare.
What I need is a switch panel or something that I can mount in the dash or the console that covers my gear lever which has enough room to mount all my switches which is easier to reach than what I have now.

So all answers on a postcard as to any suggestions what I could use to replace this

I think its gona have to be a home made jobbie Andy.

Can you not re-route all the cables and mount the original on the dash?

I was trying to keep them all together so home made it may have to be, re routing the cables is no problem its just the original box is rather large so was hoping for a smaller neater solution.
Might just mount the handbrake on the dash and stick the rest on the gearbox console

It looks as though that box is a standard size commercially available box, and as such whoever has built it has done it to what they think are your needs. I see no reson why a unit could not be fabricated, using a smaller neater housing. It is after all just a container to hide the wiring, and a support location for the switches..

There are a number of smaller neater boxes available, possibly in diecast aluminium, that would give strength and still look good.
Manufacture of the new box wouldn't be a problem either, I have pillar drills and punches. I would be happy to build it for you, but would need diagrams and sizes.
Would it be possible to attatch your handbrake switch on a bracket on the side of the gear lever, or is it Auto?

I will have a look around this weekend and see what I can find but cannot seem to get anything smaller so may have to split the switches and mount some in the dash.

This is where it gets silly because the box is auto but has an electric actuator on it and no gear lever :? but it has a console over it so this could possibly be used for mounting a few buttons :|
