My dad says that when he was younger(hard to believe)he used to get a fabricator to cut the middle of the steel wheel out and turn the wheel basically inside out to make the wheel more dished and create a wider offset.anyone heard of or done this?

Banding is legal, however you have to tell your insurance company and the welding has to be done by someone who is (i cant remember the official term) Lloyds certified. I assume the same applies for cutting the middle out and reversing it.

Yup, years ago you could do anything and still come out alive lol, classic cooper 'S' rims were a fave of mine, tho i wouldnt reccommend modifying transit wheels just in case they broke and you ended up wearing someone elses vw head on, how bad would that be

There used to be firm in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, who specialised in banding wheel rims. The wheels were known as "Scarborough rims". A mate of mine has had a set on a Morgan 4.4 for 40 years that I know of, and they haven't fallen apart! And I would imagine that 40 years ago it would be gas welding..

A mate of mine does this for a living, as well as lengthning and shortening diffs for hotrods and so on.
Not a terribly difficult thing to do. He does shortened tailshafts too.
I watched him do one for his girlfriend's Datsun 120Y to mate it to a Supra gearbox. Took about 15 minutes all up.
People think these things are some kind of black art.

I have welded wheels on trucks before, and they have been fine afterwards. Did one on a Mitsubishi Canter that had a big crack in the wheel. Ground it down to a nice vee with no cracked metal remaining, welded with a stick welder then the back was veed and welded and the whole lot smoothed off and repainted.
You couldn't tell it had been done.
AFAIK that wheel is still in daily service.

I suspect that the problem comes with welding rims because you are effectively welding a pressure vessel....

I don't think the pressure is a problem, it's more the turning at speed thing.
