Anyone carpetted/soundproofed the bulkhead?

Postby Tran59 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:38 pm

I am looking to make my new Transit (when it arrives in April) as quiet as possible and would like to know whether anyone has carpeted the cabin side of the bulkhead? I think this would look quite cool and would also help in the sound insulation. I would use plain grey or black carpetting, but are there any tips on gluing, moulding, etc.?

Thanks :)

Hello
Thats something i am currently doing on my van, any carpet from a coachbuilder should do the job. just make sure you prep the surface to roughen it up so the glue has somewhere to bond to.

Have a look at your local screwfix store and they sell good contact adhesive in spray cans - they are ideal!

I am going one step further and plastering it first in soumd damping material then carpeting.

Yes, I saw that post. Thanks :)

I like the sound of extra soundproofing material between the carpet and the bulkhead. Do you have any pix of your handywork? How much space is there between the passenger bench back and the bulkhead (I haven't actually got my Transit yet ;))?

The cab side of the bulkead is not carpeted. Not a lot of space to carpet the cab side of the bulkhead you would need to take the bulkhead it is easier than taking the seats out. Once the bulkhead is in the cab warms up in no time at all.

Oh, right... I can't really carpet the load area side, as this is going to be used for carting heavy boxes around and any posh deco is going to get ruined. I might have a go at removing the bulkhead though, as I'd really like a carpet finish inside the cab. Is it just a question of undoing a few screws and pulling the b/h away, or is it more involved?

Just a load of torq bolts, really easy to take out, they are all on the load area side.

I'm in the process of doing mine BUT in the load area,as part of a conversion, but the same stuff could be used in the cab.

I'm using Veltrim carpet, its 4mm thick, hard wearing, flexible to put on, fair choise of colours, best to use a high temp spray glue, got the carpet & glue from www.megavanmats.com

hope this helps

Thanks for your input. I would be interested in seeing what your project looks like once finished. I will be carrying lots of heavy boxes and wooden crates in the back of my Transit, so carpetting the load area is not really an option, as it would soon get damaged.

I know it's a tight fit cab-side, but I may also try to add some soundproofing foam rubber I have bought for the load area side panels. I have found some very thin carpet (about 2mm), so hopefully there will be enough room :)
