Engine options for a Mk5 minibus

Postby Big_Andy » Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:49 pm

Hi all. If any of you read my long ago previous thread, viewtopic.php?f=4&t=33377 a quick up-date. Stripped everything off head and finally removed head (after purchasing a special 'wall grip' socket to grip the knackered head bolts). I found no 4 exhaust valve firmly embeded into the piston swirl chamber and the intake valve punched into. Having been in the middle of a house move (which has cost me all the spare cash we had), the van has been laid up now in my friend's garden. I plan to pull the block out and treat the engine bay to a clean up and possibly improve the sound insulation. I can get a standard 2.5d (78PS?) engine from a similar age van for £200, but was wondering what improvement could be made during the swap. Would a Mk6 engine work out from a RWD Mk6, or would it be too much of a hassle.

Whilst I don't mind spending a bit of time to get it sorted, I can't afford to do body mods or gearbox changes/conversions, so any help would do.

Oh, and replies will be limited as I don't have net access at home yet and can only get to local library twice a week.

Cheers

I don't want to veer you away from that very kind offer but to improve performance a 100hp Mk5 Turbo engine is a straight forward swap. There's also d.i.y. intercooling things you can do but I don't think the EPIC system likes it.

When the engine bay is empty I recommend using the opputunity to get the wire brush on the go and then red oxide and hammerite especially around the chassis and engine mounts.

A bit away from you, though if I could fund the trip in a rental, it would save me a bit. I'm in Redcar in the North East. I'll have a think and check on finances/time as it still might be worth my while. Cheers

Had thought of that, but locating one might be a problem. In an ideal world, I'd have the cash so I can buy a nice turbo donor van with an Ersbacher heater for those cold re-enactment trips the family goes on. But not to be for now.

Definitely aim to start doing that in the next few days. Too good an oportunity to miss doing essentials like that.
