Advice on custom gear swap for a Transit MT75

Postby ginsambo » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:50 am

Can I swap 5th gear from a 2.5TCi Scorpio deisel MT75 (0.76) or sixth gear from a MT82 (0.74) into a transit MT75?

Standard 5th gear in an MT75 is 0.82 isn't it? Anybody cracked open an MT75 - how difficult is it? special tools etc? Is it within the realms of careful DIY or more like a diff set up job best left alone? I've got an old scorpio diesel box to practice on!..and another 2 or 3 transit boxes. Curious to see the internals and get the unknown known.

Still dreaming!!

i'm pritty sure it's possable with the scorpio box 5th gear swap i think its a mod done on a lot of big HP cossy 4x4 sierras :D

but are you sure you'd want to :?: is this for when you fit the cossy V6 engine :?:
ive got a 4.11 final drive diff and i dont need 1st gear :!: ideally i want to fit a 3.7 back axle and leave the box as it is at the moment i think its about 2000rpm@50mph

Thanks Luke. I will defo try it I think, but first and foremost I'II get it up and running and repainted. Its just that if I have spare boxes about its probably worth toying with them over the months! No harm done and I'd like to known whats inside it!

I wish I could do a whole ratio range swap, I've heard about 1st gear being redundant with the 24V in the Transit, in fact its almost redundant with a 5.14 diff and 75ps engine and a 2 tonne tipper unladen as it is. I can dream about a 4.11 but realistically, I'II be using the 4.63 twin wheels for the most part.

I've done my sums and in Fifth Gear with my 4.63 diff and the Transit box I make it a (Theoretical  ) 40mph @ 2000rpm! ?!? This really should be 55mph minimum shouldn't it?

Transit (0.82) 5th Gear:

2000rpm x 60mins/hr x 0.0012769miles per rev / 4.63 x 0.82 = 153.228/3.7966 = 40mph

6000rpm x 60mins/hr x 0.0012769miles per rev / 4.63 x 0.82 = 459.684/3.7966 = 121.1mph

Modded Scorpio (0.76) 5th Gear:

2000rpm x 60mins/hr x 0.0012769 miles per rev / 4.63 x 0.76 = 153.228/3.5188 = 43.5mph

6000rpm x 60mins/hr x 0.0012769 miles per rev / 4.63 x 0.76 = 459.684/3.5188 = 139.2mph

Seems a waste to have a four speed box though? I now know the 2.5 litre TDCi Scorpio box which forms the hybrid with the sierra V6 bellhousing for the 24V is ratio'ed at 3,61 2,08 1,36 1,00 0,76.
1st at 3.61 being the same in the 16V 2.0 DOHC Version too. Which means that 1st (3.61) is a lower ratio than the Transit's 3.89 so it should go a little bit further on the same revs no?

Do you know if its possible to swap all the gears out of the MT75? ....and...what is your top speed, 0-60 times and kerb weight with your cossy?

I'd like to drag this one day but I'II stick with the Ford America theme, ie. looks good (To my taste) and has moderate horses, but is inherently unstable with a terrible build quality and bits missing and probably breaks down before it makes the show! Almost ready to go ahead but I'II keep dreaming for the mo till the bank balance is slightly healthier.

I don't know if these endless calculations are right, but from 40mph - 121mph in one gear! Talk about motivation!! It would be nice to iron out some of the basic pitfalls in my mind so I can just focus on the mods needed for handling..like probably repositioning the engine inside the cab, see how I go first

i havent weighed it but it'll be around 1450kg
0-60 i did at ford fair was 9.6secs but that was on 5cylinders :(
1/4mile last year was 17.6 i think :? on 6 cyls but with massive axle tramp - i'm hopeing to beat it at north weald in a few weeks with no other mods other than tramp bars :D
top speed so far was around 115/120 ish (on the sat nav) was way off the clock  but the van was just rebuilt and also no silencers on the exhaust so i backed off - i didnt have a rev counter at the time so i dont know what it was at but it felt like it would go some more, cant imagine theres much left in it with the aerodynamic restrictions :?

have a look at a splinter axle , i think the only puzzle would be the hand brake cable ( mount adjuster from splinter on cross member and needs single pull wire , dont know what the tranny uses )

3.7 : 1 diff , disc's and fully manual hand brake independent of disc's

i can run my splinter with the 100 ps turbo and mt75 box at 70 all day and it tops out at 93 and its the medium hi top so about the same size as a jumbo

give me a shout if you want measurements for spring seats and such :)

thats almost identical to the mk1/2 axle :D would have been ok for me - my new axle is 66" and the wheels are bang on the outside of the arch :D on a mk3/4/5 with some nice wide wheels it would work a treat

bit too late for me :( but good info 8) as the cossy V6 transits really need a diff like 3.77

what are these sprinter diffs like :?: do they have a good reputation :?: and is LSD available :?: :D

sprinters 130x5 but you might be able to redrill the halfshafts to 160x5 then you'd only need 1 spare
or pick up another pair of the wide landy wheels and redrill to 130 and also redrill a spare transit wheel to 130 so it can be used on either axle  :D
