anyone fitted a ps3 in their van?

Postby glenandemm » Thu Aug 13, 2009 12:13 pm

hi guys anyone fitted a ps3 as im trying to find a good power inverter, searching through the net i seem to be struggling finding one as i believe the ps3 needs a constant 400 watts or something like that so i need a strong one to manage this power draw!!

try www.maplin.co.uk. not cheep. have you tried a ships chanderler outlet?

a 12v - 240 inverter will suck your battary dry.

i do not have a ps3 and do not know if it has a power transformer, Most people i have talkted to say that the power supplies are inside the main box.

I use a dc power converted to run my laptop in my transit 12vdc to 19vdc. (again from maplins) If possiable, i would suggest you use a dc dc converter than a dc ac inverter.

I have just brouht a PS3 (excellent gaming, and also great for blu-rays) and YES they are VERY power hungry - and do a very good impression of a heater too!!
I'd stick with a ps1 or 2 and a cheap n cheerful portable dvd player. cheaper and easier on the juice

whats a ups mate?
seen this on ebay at a low cost, looks like its the right power for the ps3,what do you guys think, ive got two batterys fitted on my bus so im hoping when im stationary with it on it should have a bit of power left to get it going after ive been playing on the ps3,the reason im wanting to fit a ps3 as opposed to a ps2 is thats the only console ive got plus i like using the bluetooth controllers!!

im looking to fit a 500 watt inverter wired straight to the batterys with a switch so i can turn it off when not in use, the ones im looking at have a continous of 400watt where the ps3 has an average of 380watts but some people believe this is at its peak?
the inverter also has a low battery warning so hopefully it will let me know when the batterys are getting low.
from all the searching ive done on the web most people are talking about cars with single batterys and smaller alternators,i take it mine should be able to handle it better with the double big batterys and possibly bigger alternator although ive not checked it!
im only really gonna play on the ps3 while stationary at alton towers etc when im sat there bored all day so i wont be using it while driving so it wont be jumping about, hopefully it should all be right if my thinking os correct and the inverter isnt a cheap crappy jap one!!

Hi, i cant remember what the different ratings are, but i ran an Xbox 1 using a 350W inverter in a vectra, and it ran fine,,,, but as others have said, you need to put both of them somewhere where the heat can escape,, or go to PC world and buy a 12V fan to keep the air moving.

500W inverter should be fine if you only need 350w, just make sure you use cable thick enough from the battery to supply the load.

a long while back we used an inverter to run a PS2, before the days of the slimeline PS2, it was a 500w inverter, and it just made the transit drink the fuel, back then the invertors where not very economical, the large ones anyway. After about 6 hours the invertor fried its self. But if you want your invertor to last longer, I suggest you get an inverter double of what the appliance uses power.

I now use my macbook in our own 17 seater, so no more heavy invertors dont wana f*** the alternator, I bought a 120w invertor from maplin a year ago my macbook only uses 65w and its lastes since. Its very small and portable, and its the only inverter i have bought which has lasted.

I use a dc power converted to run my laptop in my transit 12vdc to 19vdc. (again from maplins) If possiable, i would suggest you use a dc dc converter than a dc ac inverter.

I also strongly suggest using a dc to dc convertor, as its much more economical in terms of power.
If only i could get one for my macbook :(

I may be a little late for this post but..........

If you are looking for an inverter you should look for a PSW (Pure Sine Wave) inverter and not a modified sine wave MSW inverter. They are more efficient and provide a much cleaner supply of AC.

Note on wiring:

1A load at 230VAC will draw almost 20A on the 12V cabling from the battery to the inverter be careful or ask a competent electrician to work out the required cable size for you. Most important is A FUSE!! on the 12V side of things. The cheap inverters have a poor track record of breaking and I have had one fry and create a dead short on the 12V DC side! Without a suitable fuse it would have been at best a fire and possibly an explosion!
