Those Chinese 6 stud alloys

Postby fastmower » Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:56 pm

I've been talking to a Chinese guy about converting a Mk7 to 4x4 - which is by the by - but I asked him about sourcing the Mk5 6 stud alloys as seen on the brochure someone posted on here a while back. His immediate response was that he thought they were just trims, and he sent me a few pictures of wheels he seems to think are Transit fitment but all five stud. I'll sort out adding them here later although there are no details with the pics, and it seems there is a pretty good choice on the 5 stud front in the UK anyway without the hassle of importing the things.

Anyway - I told him the guys on here seemed to think these 6 stud wheels were alloys, and sent him the Chinese text from the original website about the Chinese Mk5 to see if he could clarify. This afternoon he emailed and said:

多孔镀铬轮饰罩,华丽动感,行驶中犹如流动的艺术。
This word says: chrome cover on rim make it looks good ETC..

So he seems to think these ARE just trims. Obviously I'm not in a position to argue with him, but there's a Chinese car dealer on another forum I sometimes visit and I might run it by her - this guy's English ain't great to be honest - but it's a sight better than my Chinese!

Will keep you posted.

Andy

well if they are trims they are prity good ones and i can still see people wanting them as alloys are only cosmettic- also might cost a lot less to import

Well I kept looking at the pics mate - and they look like alloys to me too!

I'll try and track down the Chinese car dealer on the relevant forum and see if she can help out.

Well I found the dealer I was on about but she's not replied to my email yet.

However - the original fella I mentioned has been to the dealers today and they've quoted him 1000RBM each, which according to my converter is about 88 quid at today's rate.

Next thing is whether they'd be legal in the UK. I'm guessing that they would have to be CE marked for sale into the European market - but am happy to be corrected if that's not the case with wheels.

Anybody know?

I had this bother when I was looking at importing Indian built Lister CS engines. Legally I could (and did) import one for my own use, but without the CE marking, I couldn't legally sell one. Apparently, if I had done, and there'd been any sort of safety related accident (as these things have exposed flywheels weighing an awful lot just for starters), I could have been held responsible under the law and prosecuted.

Guess I'll have to do some more digging.

Also worth bearing in mind that you can soon spend an awful lot on various port and customs charges once the stuff arrives. My engine should have been delivered to Liverpool and ended up in Felixstowe, and while I argued the toss with the supplier, the freight handlers down there were charging me storage at over 90 quid a week. With clearance, freight charge to get it moved up here, customs clearance, presentation of documents etc - I ended up paying as much again as I'd paid for the engine - quite a pricey deal by the time we'd done!
