V6 3 Litre, gearbox!

Postby crazygore » Fri May 05, 2006 10:03 pm

I have just fitted a 3 litre essex in my 95 lwb 100 custom, the engine and box (4 speed) came out of a mk2 ambulance, everything is fine, it goes like heck, except it really wants an overdrive or maybe a 5 speed conversion. has anyone got any ideas where I could find something? does anyone know if a 4 speed with o/d from a pinto transit would fit the essex bell housing? or if I could use the o/d from it on the ambulance box, what about changing the rear diff ratio to 3.65? can it be done? hope someone out there can help me. Also, one more slight problem, my transit has a rev counter fitted as standard, but I am having trouble wiring it up, sounds like it should be easy but I do not know which colour wires run to the rev counter!! Thanks in advance for any help, Keith.

Sorry (and I am with you on this one, want one) no 5 speed with an essex. OD is the way to go, if you find one from a pinto van swap the bell housing over from the 4 speed, I am not sure if you need the prop though.

I tried swapping the bellhousings over, it fits the gearbox, but I found the input shaft was to long, by an inch. You will need a V6 input shaft, I ended up using a scimitar gearbox for the parts.

I also then found the pinto's internals wouldn't mate up to the V6 input, so I'm now running the scimitar gearing in a transit casing.

Looking back, it would have been easyer to fit the transit gear selection/side plate to the scimitar box, and mod the prop to suit.

BTW, the V6 uses a different clutch cable, or fit a big washer to the pinto's cable!

are you saying I can use a scimitar gearbox with O/D and fit the transit side mount gear selecter plate? I thought somewhere I had seen a modded essex bellhousing that would take a 5 speed??? Where can I get some of those deep dish 70's Wolfrace alloys? they are sooo cool!
