Custom chassis

Postby ginsambo » Fri Mar 12, 2010 11:56 pm

Now this is a bit sad but bear with me. I've been doing a clutch on a 4x4 and the idea popped into my head that rather than using an Iveco chassis and running gear that I might get a custom 5 or 6mm steel heavy duty chassis made up for my Mk5 Pickup. I love my Mk5's but the chassis is their achilles heal. I've always admired Iveco chassis's but they are shite to drive and the wheelbases and track widths on the scrappers I can afford won't match up with a Transit.

Thinking about it, rather than spend hineous amounts of time and money saving the transit chassis is getting a custom one fabricated too far fetched? What are the implications for a 3.5 tonne vehicle and VOSA? I know the Iveco Dailys are prone to snapping their cab/chassis mounts so who is to say it'll not be safer than a factory built vehicle?

From what can see its just the front rails that are tapered down to avoid overidding in an accident.

Also I could recoup my losses and repair the old chassis and flog it on Ebay!

If you fit a new chassis that is not a DIRECT REPLACEMENT of

the original chassis then you will need a SVA Test 8)

Also I doubt you will get any decent payload as the weight of

the van will be very much higher.....

I doubt any insurance company would touch it too!

I say this as a VOSA Vehicle Examiner....

If you want a chassis...........Buy an Iveco to start with!

:( Gone are the days that if you wanted something to your spec. you just made your own then. :(

I was thinking more aline the lines of a class 5 showpiece not a class 7 workhorse anyhow and I've already a couple of insurers who might be willing.

I was thinking that a custom 5/6mm box chassis would reduce load height too, not too worried about losing 500kg+ payload. I don't want to be a wannabe trucker or carry much weight with it - that is what Ivecos and Scanias are for - I'II use it for the lighter, bulkier, greener stuff, making myself feel good and creating warmer wetter winters. The problem is whenever you mention a custom commercial to any garage, VOSA inspector, insurance company or anyone it immediately gets their backs up and with good reason I suppose and the worst of it is they immediately assume you have some irrational mental disorder which is also probably true. I like some things Ford do, other things I think that, for my purposes, I could improve on. Of course I haven't got the luxury of 20 custom transits to crash test and I guess that without this I am just going to have a hard time. I will look further into this, even it it means that the result is a class 5 3000kg gross vehicle with a shitty payload. Hell, its only one more class above a kit car afterall. I suppose the rational is that as long as the custom vehicle disintergrates on impact, without any ill effect or momentum carried through to other road users or pedestrians that VOSA'll be a bit more tolerant of you.

To be honest I am thinking of using Iveco or F350 running gear anyhow. OK so what is an SVA test?

Looked up the Single Vehicle Approval Scheme - doesn't look so bad or expensive. This is an oddball dream not a slick rational commercial maneuver anyhow. Thanks for the grounded advice though eh!

Class 5 is for Large Minibuses anyway

The easy way is to buy an Iveco, remove the cab and graft on a Transit cab.

Much less work and.......100% legal.

Many years ago I bought a BMC FG lorry......Goggle it if you want

I put a Mk1 Cab on it and a Homemade Spec.

It turned a few heads and...was awsome in what it could lift.

Downside it drove like a BMC FG.....

Yep. That was my original idea after a mechanic mentioned that if I really liked Smiley cabs then that's what I should do a few years ago back! Only concern was the rear track (Not wide enough) and the wheelbase on the older 3510 LWB's being long enough for the job. But Iveco chassis and running gear it is then.

My only other thought was an F350 dually chassis and gear - but then who in their right mind would break an F350 to put a smiley transit cab on it! - I've enough rusting hulks already

Thanks for your sound advice and watch this space!

Right, sorry to be a perennial pain in the ass but the pre 2000 Dailys were 2300mm wheelbase max (200mm less than the Transit) fitting that chassis would be like reverting to a MK3. And I will never find a post 2000 LWB Daily under £2300 - they're indestructible. Best bet is to wait for a stolen fire damaged one I guess. :(
