cosworth fitting questions

Postby AndyJ2506 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 8:34 pm

i cant seem to find the answers too these questions regarding fitting a cosworth engine in a mk5
1. can you buy the engine mounts or do you have to have them fabricated, if so do you know of a drawing for them
2. can you keep the origional propshaft and does it bolt straight on
3. is there anything else major that needs fabricating otherthan the exhaust
4. can i use complete wiring loom out of the granada and keep aircon and cruise control etc
5. will i be able to use the fuel pump from the granada or what one will i need
Any other info would be much appreciated as well
Sorry for all the questions but i've just had a £3500 quote to have it fitted so i thought i'd have a go myself cheers for any help

ok granada (fuel pump) so must be V6

1. - you can get mounts of a V6 ambilance but they are very rare :( they will fit the cossy engine but one fouls the oil return so you can either move that or remake the mount (which was what i did)

2. if your using manual box yes - if you swapping to auto its the same box used on the transit so a transit auto prop will fit

3. not that i can think of

4. you can keep those and still thin the loom down loads

5. you can use the granada pump - but you will need to make a new tank - or have one made, the unit it too tall for a transit tank - i had an ally tank made

any other info............ it's very fast and worth the hassle EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT :!: 8)

Thanks very much for that. i'm gonna be building myself a double garage later in the year so i'll have somewhere to do the conversion as its more than i've taken on before so i'm not sure how long it'll take. i'll prob buy myself another transit to run around in while i'm doing it tho just incase
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the ambulance mounts. Also its gonna be auto as i like the idea of having an auto van as i'm lazy :D
Another couple of questions
Do you reckon it would be worth using the granada dash so i can keep all the computer etc or would this be more hastle than its worth
i take it i can't use the prop from the granada due to length
And what do you reckon the chances of modifying the granada brakes to fit the tansit are :?:
Sorry again just like to get information in advance to prepare myself
And the fast part is what i was hoping for 8)

where abouts are you?? if your local you can come and look at mine or see me at the next meet :D

the granada brakes - forget em :!: - the transit ones are bigger/better :D after all remmeber a transit needs to stop at 70mph with 3500kg all in a granada doesnt

same with the prop - transit is bigger you need the front section from a transit auto or i think an early mk3 with a type 9 might be same :?

the wiring for the cruise control is hardly any when you get it out i split it off so its completly seperate (yet to get it working properly but i think its my speed sensor thats at fault)- same with the trip computer not much too it - but that ive had working :D

one point with the transit v6 mounts - they are only ever made for a mk4 not mk5 so if you fit them to a mk5 you'll need the mk4 chassis mount part off any mk3/4 transit - but it's not a perfect bolt up job it needs slight modding :D

Thanks a lot luke.
Unfortunately i'm in Essex so a bit far away, but i'd be up for coming to a meet to have a look at some point.
I see what you mean about the brakes tho :( I'm gonna have to rethink this one then. Maybe a nice set of AP six pots

radiator if its any good
but there are loads of bits others would want, dash pod, adapterplate, flywheel and starter etc. :!:

i'm no expert on autos but, ... the pedal box i'd imagine you can just take the clutch lever off :? but the stick would be nice as the cossy is the same box as the transit - and obviously the granad stick would be too short - i dunno if you can extend them :?
