This idea is back in my mind big time...I think I might know where someone is wrecking a Mk5...and I would kinda like IFS and Rack&Pinion in my Mk2 truck...certainly know I want power steering in it!

How is it mounted to the chassis , that has to be one of the best mods to do to a mk1 aside from putting in a di

Haha! Mine's a 4.1 litre crossflow six, and if that changes at all it will only be for the EFi version of said crossflow six...

i did this about 10 years ago to my lwb mk2 it took several atempts but the best way i found was to before i removed it from original van weld some bracing to the shocks so they are in the position needed then i cut out the inner wings and fabricated some turrets (simlar to mk 1 escorts) welded them into place then fitted it all together once ground and painted looked like they were supposed to be there .i hadthe van for a long time was regularly seen around nsva uksv shows and created a lot of interest. i must admit ive seen some pretty dodgy attempts of doing this some clearly unsafe with wheel angles totally wrong i fitted power steering on mine was well worth the effort especially as i had chevy v8 in it if your gonna do it make it safe take your time and check everything at least twice before you weld it all up. the difference is worth all the work if you get it right
if its got tits or wheels its always gonna end in trouble !!!
anyone can restore a van but it takes a real man to chop it up !!!

I am in the middle of this conversion at the moment and see that the spindle to take the column is up against the filter which in turn is very close to the exhaust. Can I rotate the filter bracket to clear it?

Cheers

i dont fully understand (got any pics) but do you mean the oil filter :?: behind it is the oil/water cooler (i never had this on) this will unbolt and screw the filter direct onto the block - you can get remote filer location kits if you need then you can either swap to a oil/air cooler :?:

I have the oil/water cooler still attached and a leg that goes down aboct 3 inchs and the filter attachs to this. You have all this removed and the filter direct to the block? If so did you just connect the water pipes together?

(you know me and pictures it would be the middle of next week before I would get them on the page.... )

Thanks

yes - filter is directly onto the block, i got rid of the whole arm thing, i can't rememebr what i did with the pipes - i think from memory they come from the heater so you can remove one pipe and fit the other direct :? :)

i always intended to fit a decent oil/air cooler but never got round to it :)

Without the cooler did you ever have any temp problems?

Also I am going to shorten the new column so as not to get the "notch" you were talking about.

Next are the shock mounts as I never took measurements from the original van.Would you have any suggestions?

for the column - once it aligned it using the welded up U/J it was spot on - brownysV6 has the welded u/j now :D not sure if shortning the column would do - i'd have to sit down and get my head round it

for the shock tops - personally i'd go to the trouble of getting a scrap van doing what i did and welding the shocks to the cross memeber then bolting that in yours to align the strut tops spot on ........... what are you using mk3 or mk4/5 :?:
