Replacing back doors with a single window

Got double doors on the back of my bus, and the seals are knackered and it's all rusted up so I'm thinking of getting the doors taken off and the hole replaced with a big window, tidying it all up. Might save a bit of weight too, I can imagine the doors are pretty heavy.

Looks like I can get the aluminium for between £40-80, and a window can't be too much.

Anybody got any experience doing any of this kind of stuff? Will need to get a pretty big piece of aluminium and a window, and I know of a guy that would be able to do the bodywork. Presume it's a case of taking the doors off, cutting around the hole so it's free from any defects, rivetting in some aluminium, doing a bit of filling between the seams, fitting a window and then getting it sprayed.

Is it easy as that or am I suffering from wishful thinking?

if you know what you are doing and have the skills, materials and tools it pretty well is as easy as that, if not would probably turn into a complete mare,
you will have to make a stiffening frame to support the window and to stop the sheet flexing/booming
take a look inside a ally luton body to get an idea about the stiffening, best of all might be to get a side from a luton, cut to shape and graft onto your van

Hi Alex. Have you considered finding a suitable window from maybe a duple coach , double decker bus or similar.You'll need to find a commercial breakers yard
Cut the window AND as much of the alloy surround out as possible , then cut and patch it to suit your vehicle.
I did it years ago to a Bedford CF 280 , Although I used a Sunbeam Talbot Glass hatch and surround.

im about to build some fiber glass panals soon for my camper build if you watch the thread i can show how it's done, a mate of mine built a camper from a bus almost the same as yours and he made it look a pig of a job by using ally he did not have a clue.
