Wheels for a Mk5 swb

Postby johny transit » Mon Oct 18, 2010 1:37 pm

I have read everything I can find about wheels, as I am keen on some new ones for my swb100 mk5.
I really like the look of slot mags or maybe modular wellers.
I'm a bit confused regarding wheel sizes and tyres...so if I get bigger wheels, then does the tyre wall depth need to be less so that the overall diameter of tyre on road is the same as normal? If not, will the speedo read incorrectly? If I have bigger wheels with lower profile tryes, can you still get van rated tyres? I presume van rated means able to take a bit of weight? I don't normally have anything in the back, but on the odd occassion will help mates out with removals etc and once or twice my old bus was riding well low (a 120) so it is a consideration.
What width of tyre is best? I imagine I don't want to go too wide as an unladen van it will slide about in the wet? And of course, clearance to think about ie getting the steering on full lock?
I've found the tyresave page which shows what sizes for tyres/wheels combinations, all still a bit confusing.
I'd prefer not to have to build wider wheel arches too. Or go to the added expense of adaptors.

You wont be able to fit the wheels then. The trouble with the wellers and modulars is they are designed for the earlier vans and although they physically fit the studs they stick out further.

As for the tyres, you need to use a tyre size calculator to work it out so that the tyres have the same diameter.
