the first 24v van i did i used a 2.9 ambulance set up for, and that used an big flywheel, way bigger than a car 2.9 flywheel, weighed a lot to, so i'm guessing the 2.9 transits do have a larger than normal flywheel to give a lot more inertia torque as they are used for load carrying.
2.8 car flywheel is the same diameter as a 2.9 car one but its thinner and loads lighter, much better on the 24 valve. the YB cossie clutch fits the V6 flywheel, but the YB flywheel wont fit as the bolts dont line up.
in a car a 24 valve works really well with a lighter 2.8 flywheel and a YB cossie pressure plate. use the XR4x4 2.9 friction plate though as you'll get about 25% more torque handling this way.
some peolle have problems with using the 2.8 flywheel though as its thinner and the hole in the box the actuating arm goes through needs modding to allow more movement. you can also drill and tap and stick a bolt through the mounting for the other end of the actuating arm to make it adjustable to do the same job.
dunno how relevant this is to transits, but it may help.
I have just bought a 2.5TDI engine to fit into my 1994 Ambulance camper, it was originally fitted with a 2.9 V6 that was replaced with a 2.5D engine. Clearly half the HP of the original wasn't going to produce a performance machine or even something that I couldn't out run up hill with a good pair of trainers.
The first thing I decided to do was to replace the water pump and all of the belts and then the clutch. This is where I have run into problems. The belt and pump were no problem I just ordered for a 2.5TDI but when I removed the clutch I found it was 265mm in diameter, does anyone know where I can get one at reasonable cost. All the Transit clutches I have found on the internet come back as around 240mm and most sites require a registration number to search their sites and if I put in my number it comes back as a 2.5DI with a 240mm diameter clutch.
