wheels for my cossie project....advice needed...

Postby Gavin » Fri Apr 08, 2011 6:02 pm

ok, i was hoping to have these done and on the van before revealing them, but im stuck and need some advice.

ive got some 16" 6.5j steel wheels off a MOD snatch landrover, plus some brand new mk1 transit chrome caps.

the wheels as they are are perfect offset to be legal front and rear on a mk4/5, but im planning on having them banded to 8" at the rear and running a mk3 axle. the idea of using these is they look nearly stock, have that old skool cool, apeing the 60's rod look, but on a more modern van with cossie power  . was going to lower the van and fit them with low profiles, something like this photoshop, bit crap but you get the idea. i want 16" as they will fill the arches and have the effect of shrinking the van, yet look almost stock at first glance.

i think in the flesh it will look the tits, plus ive got some other ideas im working on to further complete the look. :D

problem is, they are designed for tubed tyres and im wondering if i can mod them to do what i want, or if its a dead end idea. :(

on top of that, being designed to survive a war zone, they weigh a fooking ton.

the main issues are that the rims are riveted to the centres, and dont have a bead stop. so im hoping i can have the centres welded and the rivets welded up, and then maybe have a bead of weld run round to serve as a bead stop, looking at the bare transit rim ive got, the bead stop isnt much more than a bead of weld would be.

is this possible? is it safe :?:

please help, ive got sod all idea about tyre fitmens and need to know if its do-able before forking out any more money... :(

also what do people think of the look :?:

thanks....

Well Gavin, I think they would look mint, kinda like the Lotus steelie, but more substantial 8) With regards to the possibility of doing it, I would suggest speaking to a stock carbuilder, as those guys always band their wheeel rims. Can't see why not tho.... :)
If you want a real van.......You gotta get a Transit!!!!

yeah lotus steelies is the idea. just look at the dish on those big rims, how much narrower is a mk3 axle? looks like 3" to me? now imagine those on the front filling the arches and same on the back but with another 1.5" dish.... 8) 8) 8)

i weighed the rims.... the landy steels are 14kg each, standard transit ones are about 9kgs  50% heavier, hope that aint too much :(

guess i'll go ask on rods n sods maybe i'll get an answer over there if no-one can help here :?:

about time i registered there

i read it gavin but i'd rather not answer unless i'm sure :!:

as for the weight the 16" landy wellers ive done are heavier than the 14" transit ones but they are bigger so thats expected - as for the tubless/tubed rims and tyres that i dont know - whats the difference in the lip? i think :? it has something to do with the 'J' when you say 8J they J refers to the profile of the lip :)

yeah luke thats how i understand it, i think the only difference is the addition of the bead stop on tubeless wheels. like i said on the transit wheels the beadstop isnt much more than a bump, its rolled into the rim, i recon it could be replicated with a bead of weld on the landy ones.

the only thing im wondering about is are tubed and tubeless tires different in the bead on the tire, because the tubeless one has the beadstop is a 16" tubeless one slightly smaller circ than the tubed one?

hang on....are the landy wellers tubeless then :?:

i wonder if theres a plain landy steel thats tubeless? i got these cos the offset was spot on for a mk4 and they look like standard tranny ones, but if theres one that looks the same but is tubeless i might be better wth that, i might just need to get them banded to get the fit right..

hmm nice lookin wheels, fookin heavy though  wont help the performance much,be like drivin round with 2 wheels on each corner :?
wot u doin about the pcd :?: drillin the wheels or hubs :?:
and if ur runnin 6.5 s on the front think u might need to stretch some narrow tyres on there so they dont stick out

was planning on redrilling the wheels, i'll be covering them with the chrome caps so you wont see the nuts or the old holes.

the weight is a worry, all that extra rotating mass

the offset is bang on, they dont stick out, will post some pics tomorrow

i might sell them on though :( think i might be better getting some late defender ones as theres a few listings on ebay saying they are tubeless, plus they will be lighter being domestic rather than military ones. the real reason i got these was the offset being spot on, didnt think about the tubed tyre and weight issues till they arrived

Three words - sorry, two words and a colloquial contraction, one contradictory statement. What's your point?

how much do your wellers weigh paul :?:

bet they're over 10kgs, probably nearer 12 :!: be interested to know what the wheel & tyre weight is, bet its around 22kgs. standard transit is about 17.5

still i think 14kgs is too much, like i said im going to look again at late defender wheels, they are tubeless and should be lighter being for civvy use. i'll just have to get all four banded rather than just the rears.

what do you guys think of the look im going for? just want to be a bit different to all those alloys or wellers.....

talking to martin today about these and we think 2 of the wellers on his (back 2 are different to the front) are proberbly designed for tubes as the hole or the valve is bigger than the standard ones - he had to modify the hole to use them without inner tubes :D but they have been fine for the 6 months they have been on and dont leak at all :D

if i remember i'll weigh a 16" weller - ive got a few with no tyres on :D
