Mk5 roof panel - for a vent?

Hi all,

Looking at fitting a roof vent of some description (probably a caravan style one) to let some light into the back. Spotted a square panel on the roof of the van which looks like an ideal size, but I've never seen a transit with anything actually fitted there as standard. Unfortunately the inside is already boarded so no idea if there's anything on the inside to give a clue, but does anyone know what this panel is for? Was there a factory option for a rooflight of some sort? Or for some kind of chiller unit etc?

Looks like the one, I'll try to get a photo later on. I've got a 40x40 roof light I'm hoping to fit - don't suppose you can remember the measurements? My ladder is on a "long term lend" to a mate so can only see it from bedroom window at the moment!

in inch it is 21X21 that the white bit and the orange bit is 23X23 the panel is 30X28 only know that cause i can get on to my roof very easy just stand on the seat and jump up

I hate those flimsy caravan-type blow moulded vents so I went for a boat deck hatch. Its made of 10mm smoke tinted acrylic with a strong aluminium frame. If I forget and leave it open and drive off down the motorway it doesn't self destruct. On boats people often stand on them and they come to no harm.

Yes, they are pricey but after having replaced a couple of the "cheap & nasties" I figured I would go upmarket a bit.

mine as not blow up it is always left open and i do 70+ on the motorway
