Ford Transit to Daimler Dingo

Postby oddbal1 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 12:52 pm

Hi guys I just got on here to pick a few brains.
Sorry if there are set introduction areas etc that I have overlooked.

Anyway I am one of these mad Ba****ds that are into WW2 battle re-enactment and also airsoft.

Well I am looking into the ways I could build a rear engine light weight full scale version of the WW2 Daimler Dingo scout car.
The current way I am looking is to use Ford Transit front suspension and hubs and fit them in the rear of a custom made chassis along with the engine or at least a Ford engine.
The track with would also have to be close to 1.7M wide which is narrower that a standard Transit.
The Dingo used 18" rims but 16" will do at a push and look more like the Canadian version.

Video of the basic idea here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFFJtDWnVXI
Other forum thread for more info on the idea here

now i like a man who loves a challange
if your building a scratch built chassis you can always fabricate a x member to the width you need using whatever mounts and measurements
then all you would have to do is either get shorter arms fitted to the steering rack or source somthing else
i cut a big chunk out of a chevy g20 day van x member to fit a transit di never failed mot
but i did reinforce the edges with box section
if its got tits or wheels its always gonna end in trouble !!!
anyone can restore a van but it takes a real man to chop it up !!!

Yes the rack can be cut down no problem, however not sure about drive shafts :?

Also I am thinking 1800cc engine as I don't need a big lump in this.
I was thinking Mondeo gearbox, engine and maybe subframe with a mod to handle the transit hubs.
However I am thinking a Transit box will be a better ratio for the bigger wheel diameter and general vehicle type. Now would an 1800 Mondeo engine couple up on a front wheel drive transit box?

I am thinking use front struts off a rear wheel drive Transit, all this should give a nice clear and light weight front end as I am thinking it could be a tow to site vehicle on a dolly so no MOT headache etc.

well with a lada niva he could use the hole running gear as is no need to start chopping and changing using this engine with that box having to have stuff made up out of this and that. if it was all lada running gear be easlyer to build and you might even to keep the lada id and get it motd

surely an old suzuki sj410 /413 would be the best base to start? wheels on the corners, similar proportions, already on a chassis.... ive known people put v8's into them...

heres my old 410 green laner on 16" dumper truck wheels.. its a ladder chassis with outriggers for the body, converting it would be easy, just cut the outriggers off, build the central tub off the chassis and bulkhead and the arches out over the wheels :!:

and this for those who dont know is a dingo...

Thanks for your interest guys I don't think any of you can see the other forum link as you would see I have already been thinking of many of these ideas.
The dumper was my first thought but very slow and hard to find a front wheel steer version.
Jeeps etc are not perfect because I want a rear engine and trying to keep it light so don't need 4x4 just RWD and rear engine like the small ATV buggies you see about these days. However to look right is should be capable of having large OD wheels and hence some decent bearings and hence large PCD like a transit.

A range rover would give me 5x165 PCD and nice cheap 16" LR tyres but the struts and hubs are not as plentiful as a Transit.

I think Transits are awesome vehicles and have so many variations also I think the PCD is 5x160 so quite close to a LR wheel rim. Anyway I think a Transit 16" rim may be good for a large ATV type tyre, I would prefer a WW2 style bargrip as in the photo above.
Good photos can be seen here

PS I am not Garry Barlow who ever he is

The Dingo was copied by Ford to make the Lynx Scout Car and also by the Italians who then supplied them to the Germans.

Lynx Scout Car

A closely related vehicle, the Lynx Scout Car, was produced by Ford Canada in Windsor, Ontario. The Lynx took a Dingo-type hull and set it on a chassis with four wheel drive taken from the rear mounted engine. While the engine was more powerful than the Dingo's, the gearbox and suspension were inferior. 3255 units were built, entering service sometime around 1943.

The Autoblinda Lince ("Lynx") was an Italian armored car used by the Italian Social Republic between 1943-1945 during World War II. The Lince was a copy of the British Daimler Dingo and was primarily used for reconnaissance. Its armament consisted of a single 8 mm machine gun. Some 250 vehicles were built in all. The vehicle was also employed by German forces as Panzerspähwagen Lince 202(i).
Image

The Lynx seems to have used 9.00 X 16 tyres.
I see the Transit has used 16" rimshttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRANSIT-215-7 ... 20bba633be

Image

You can see the Lynx used leaf springs not the coils like the Dingo.
Image

The WW2 Dingo only had a 55 BHP engine which was straight 6 x 2.5L you could get that from an old 1.3L these days just slung in the back so lighter than the Transit unit.
I think this could weigh in at about 800kg if made light.

i no its a long shot but cant u just move engine to the back on a home made frame and use a transfer box transmit drive to the drien axal with a small prop shaft and use a transit front axal if u get my drift?

it wont be light if you use transit stuff :!: the sj is very light...850 ish kilos, with all the 4x4 gear...

i'm sure theres a link on rhinoriders of a reversed sj, not a huge job to swap the axles and steering round so its engine is in the back, duno how you'd get it to go in the right direction though

many people put the radiators in the back for offroading, and the engine is very small and low, it would go under the dingo profile easily.

i think you're trying too hard, start with a readily available chassis / suspension / drivetrain combo and put your time effort and energy into making and detailing the body so it looks absolutely spot on. sod whether its faithful underneath. no-one's gonna see that or care.

ive been to a few ww2 reinactments and tbh...whilst the weaponry and clothing and noise seems very realistic, the actual battles are far from it  the action is always too slow too close and overplayed so that the man on the mic can make a show of things. i dont think anyone in the crowd is going to crit you if the engine happens to be in the front, or its not exactly full scale, i doubt many would notice

Hi mate, interesting project you have there.
This chap, http://www.milweb.net/features/reprostug.php, had the workshop next to me, he used to build quite a bit of stuff, German though. Helped him out with some of the mechanical stuff, so anything is possible. One thing for sure, put up the progress reports for us all to see.
Good luck,
