As the owner of one I'm seriously starting to think it would be a lot better for me to bite the bullet and fit a bent Commodore super six as somebody suggested; owners claim it will give all the power of a V8 with the frugality of a four cylinder -32 miles per gallon - if driven more gently.
I would also like to fit a 2.88:1 diff plus a wide ratio (2.78, 1.93, 1.36, and 1:1) top loader four speed gearbox (one advantage is that I would also be getting rid of this annoying stick in the middle of the floor), PLUS another VERY wide ratio top loader with a 3.82:1 first ratio mounted right behind it, using only its first and direct (1:1 ratio) gears through a button on the gear knob itself controlling a gear change solenoid, not as a "gear splitter" but as a true eight speed gearbox, where the fourth speed on low would be nicely and usably spaced from "fifth" and then all the way through a very fast 2.88:1.
No overdrive and nothing inside any gearbox turning any faster than the engine itself has to be an advantage, too.
The eight final ratios would be 32.7, 22.7, 15.96 (a little bit more powerful than my current 15.5:1 first gear now), then 11.76, 6.68, 4.86, 3.71, and 2.88.
Assuming I could get a solenoid working the two gears of that secondary top loader, is this a doable job?
Even if I don't change the engine I may still do this and I reckon I can do most of the job myself if somebody holds my hand.
Would it work?
