Postby jonnyshag » Sat Sep 17, 2005 10:34 pm

I had a dump valve fitted to my transit turbo diesel, it worked but very costly :D

Remind me, what exactly does this do and how does it improve performance? I had heard they were now 'unfashionable' with the boy racers, so can't be that important!

Yeah, I have heard the noise it makes, a local kid used to have an XR3i, but I wondered what ithe dump valve is for. Turbo trannies don't have them, or is that just a diesel thing?

A dump valve is to stop turbo lag by helping it to continue to spin whilst changing gear. But to be honest I think they are more for show and can't imagine it will really make much difference on a diesel.

Yeah to be honest it didnt make much difference ,but sounded really good especialy coming from a transit diesel, i also had a turbo gauge fitted on the dash which came in useful :)

Block the wast gate pipe and you can run 20/30 psi boost = lots more power + less mpg when you gun it and set your dump valve to 28 psi
this will work good i have done this on a few TD

They are not made for specific vehicles. All it is is a short piece of tubing with an over presure valve on the side. The tricky bit is getting the correct bits of tubing to connect it and if you've got something rare and Japanese then it all has to be anodised blue aluminium :) It shouldn't be a problem on the 2.5 td transit engine as there is a long section of tubing between the turbo and the inlet manifold to fit it. I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference on a diesel though. On a petrol engine when you lift off the throttle to change gear the air inlet is effectively completely blocked and the turbo pressure quickly builds to very high levels slowing the turbo. This just isn't the same in a diesel because there is no throttle.
All the same the sound would be cool 8) or at least unexpected!
