What code reader do you recommend?

Postby Ol Badger » Sun Dec 21, 2025 11:48 pm

Hi all,

I have a basic Streetwise OBDII code reader and am thinking it is worth getting one with more functions. Any recommendations would be appreciated, if possible I would like to keep it under £500, but would consider spending more if beneficial. I'll typically only be using it for myself, so it may not get a lot of use.

I got the Thinkcar that O’Reilly autos recommends on his YouTube channel and there’s a discount code and it’s comes with lifetime updates, but most of the others all use the launch system

If it's only for ford then there's no point buying anything other than Forscan.
Factory level access and cheap for what you get.
Basic program download is free for reading codes as you only pay for the cable which can be between £35-75 depending which one you go for.
Otherwise it's a Subscription for extended licence (after the initial free period when you register an email).
But if you're likely to only need the extended licence options rarely you can register another email address for another free period. But a subscription is not expensive.

Downside is that the best platform to run it from is a windows laptop though there are other basic options for android or apple via Bluetooth adapter.

If you're doing more than ford then you'd best do your research on which brands are covered and to what extent for the brands you may require it for.

Thank you for the pointers all, I’ll take a look at those mentioned and do a bit more research, we have an old Nissan MICRA which does not require one. No point getting something I will hardly use. Cheers :D
