Alloy wheels

Have seen a Mk 5 out today ( sheffield ) and the wheels are usually seen on cars ( 100 + ) centres on them.. I was wondering if any of our trusted boffins on here knows the law regarding non weight rated alloys. If i am using the van for personal use ie ferrying wife and kids and mabe 2 / 3 small crossers at the weekend, do i really need weight rated wheels??
I know it would be dangerous with some wheels but dont know where i would stand with the law and the insurance company. Anyone have any thoughts or some DEFINITE info?? Cheers people!

If you've made an alteration to the vehicle from factory specification and not informed the insurance company then your insurance is invalidated. (fact)


The police might pull you up on it on construction and use. The wheels used aren't fit for the design and construction of the vehicle. However few coppers would know that. (not sure)

well im running car alloys on my van - my alloys have no SWL on them, but they passed the mot fine

the only thing i know is my non commercial tyres need to be weighted same or above my GVW for each axle - which they are

they could try - but i would argue it as far as necarssary as far as "aren't fit for the design and construction" they are wheels designed for a road vehicle which my van is - it weighs less than a car - for example any 4x4 or even a granada

Not quite true. (Contrary to popular belief) The insurance company could void your policy if they found out, and you might find that they paid out a reduced amount on the value of your vehicle in the event of a claim, but the insurance is still valid as regards third party claims until the insurance company cancels it.

This is still the case even if your MOT and Tax has run out, and you have four bald tyres and have put a 7.5 litre engine in and not told them!

The only two factors which invalidate your insurance is if the driver does not hold a licence, or is disqualified from doing so.
