scrap yards - how do they work

ok so I keep seeing on here people saying that they picked something up from the scrap yard, but how do these things work - do they have a shop of salvaged parts or is it a case of wandering round a pile of defunct vehicles and pointing at what you want etc?

At the scrapyards I go to you just walk around the piles of scrapped vehicles, remove what you want then take it to the shop to pay. They are willing to give you a hand though if something needs a special tool or extra brute force.

there are two by me one is very high tech you go to the office an they bring you what you want.
The other is a free for all you wander round find what you want and get the tool box out

our 'local' at Stamford Bridge (Yorkshire - for any taxi driver asked to go to a football ground try round the corner you southern muppet) sold out to an American recycling company for a few million, the Yanks are aiming to strip down vehicles and sell parts off the shelf and recycle plastics etc, 'broken' and 'worn' out parts, very hi-tech. I remember in the 'old' days pitching up with a toolbox climbing around the piles to get the parts then being searched on the way out to make sure you paid for what you had taken.

...or look for bunch of containers on a disused airfield or similar site, you may find a luxury car, manhole covers or just Transit engines and gearboxes being stockpiled for illicit export...watch out for the dogs though

How do scrap yards work? I am amazed you need to ask! Basically you go in with a multi tool and come out with about half an interior inside your clothing...... no wait, that might only be women.... If you are a bloke, maybe you best go and pay for stuff

my local hardly has anything standing ! as soon as it comes in its onto a truck and down the motorway the price he gets for it he dont care if anybits he sells or not!

Smaller Scrap yards are slowly going due to health and safety. No oil. no petrol etc.. A few years ago you had to pay some one to take your vehicle away now that scrap is about £150-£200 a ton its a different story. Its shredded on a large scale and shipped to the eastern countries who are happy to pay LARGE amounts of wonga per ton. Cat converters fetch £25 a piece.

Its not that grim up NORTH.
