ive had arc eye once, never again as god its annoying  . i got mine welding a mates fiesta van front panel, I couldn't always get to see where i needed to weld with the helmet on so i had to turn away and close my eyes while i spot welded it in more akward places only had to do it a few times but it was enough as 4 that morning i was up with arc eye  the thing is ive done welding without a mask ( closing my eyes and turning away ) for a lot longer than i did that day and nothing :?

closest ive ever come was i borrowed a mates mask - one of those auto darkening ones - infact it was the 1st time i'd used one - spent all day gouging and welding some rails, that evening my eyes were sore - found out that he had it set on a really low shade like 8 or something cos his eyes were so bad  i usually use 10 of the little welder and 11 for the big one :)
but i wouldnt say my eyes felt like grit was in them mabe just some light dust at the worst

I was out late at night welding, paused to check workpiece, then forgot to flip the mask back down and sparked up :|

I just downed a can of lager and went to bed
