Numberplates

Something that has always bugged me, often see it on ultility vans. They move the rear numberplate up to the top of the rear doors complete with a seperate plate light, or just add a 2nd plate, or fit a square plate in the normal place

i have seen this loads of times as well, on civil engineering, ground works and ultility vans. could it have something to do with towing a trailer or the other bits they tow around??

I think you are right the plate at the top can be seen when towin a trailer so they dont put a plate on the trailer

dont bank on being legal doing this tho. I had a car transporter with a trailer had number plate on top of cab in plain view, no plate on trailer. rozzers pulled me said it was ilegal and presented me with fixed penalty. And I was empty at the time.

it is legal to just put the plate high up but it should be lit...all the legal bufmph say is a plate should be of legal size and visible it does not say anything about it having to be on a trailer or car being tow with suspended lift....local police get stuff wrong a lot of the time..

I think you are right the plate at the top can be seen when towin a trailer so they dont put a plate on the trailer

this is what ive always assumed but i'd imagine there is a max length of the trailer - you dont see it being done with long trailers

Talking of legality of number plates, I've just got a fixed a fixed penalty as my front number plate fell off back in August last year. I never replaced it as it saved me at least 3 times from the mobile camera van. Any hows I can live with the £30 fine as it's saved me at least £120 and 9 points, But my Question is if anyone knows; if it is illeagal for a car or van not to have a front number plate why do motorcycles not have them?

right made a few enquierys and this is from a good source in the police(traffic division)
If towing any trailer there SHOULD be a towing light board fitted including reg number if the towing vehicle lights or reg number are not visible ..There is a max length of trailer thats does not need any light board(Cant remember now but it was like 2metres long max length)but must still have reflectors fitted in any case...And spec lifts should have a light board and number plate on the rear of the towed vehicle and the towed vehicle should have its number plate obscured by the light board with towing vehicle number plate in its place..
