Bigger Trucks Fuel Consumption

Postby APSDS » Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:18 pm

In a matter of interest what is the average MPG for a bigger vehicle like a 7.5 tonne truck?
As we already know that the Ford Transit is very good on fuel if its running correctly.
But what is the next size up vehicle like on fuel?
Truck like the old Ford Cargo etc?

Just discussing if it would be cost effective to run a bigger truck but wonder about the fuel Consumption.

I used to drive a Leyland DAF 7.5 tonner with a box body on a 54 plate - that used to average around 19 litres per 100km according to the trip computer in it. Packed that job in soon after the trucks were all limited to 56mph, so it may have improved a tad from that figure - but the truck makers sites should probably have some figures on somewhere.

We'd had a few Cargos on hire from time to time and personally I thought they were horrible to drive at the side of the DAF. Think I even preferred the Mitsubishi Canter and that's saying something! The Ivecos were nice and comfy on the motorway but on multi drop work around town they felt really sluggish and cumbersome - the DAF felt like a sportscar next to them. Had a 150 with drawbar gear on it and that was a beauty - used to go from Carnforth to Andover and back every night fully loaded with about three gear changes in each direction!

Dont worry I haven't brought one. I still relie on my Scraps.
But just thinking aloud about the future if I was to go crazy and take my CPC to get a operators License.
The problem is that the next jump from a transit is so costly. Crap fuel consumption, double Road Tax, Insurance etc. :?
At this time its defiantly not cost effective. :(
