question from swedish member

Hi. Just out of curiosity, browsing this forum I've seen the word "mot" several times. I was just wondering what that is. I figured it's simular to our motor vehicle inpection, is that correct? If it is, how often to you have to check your vehicles? My transit is from 1973, so it's labeld a veteran vehicle. That meens no tax, inspections every two year. Do you have such benifits owning older cars/vans?
BTW, I really enhjoy this forum and I'm going to use it a lot, so more questions are to be expected

The M.O.T is an Anual test for us, it doesnt matter how old the vehicle is it still needs to be tested every year once it is three years old. With vehicles registered before 1973 they can have a 'free' tax disk.

welcome, and what year are your vehicles ready for no tax?????? we have a bad goverment that changed it , it was for vehicles that were 25yrs old ,but then new goverment changed the rules and free tax is only for 1/1/1973 backwards!
it is a great shame as some of the mk2 transit would now be tax exempt!

so she is over 3 years old then? Not too sure if that's good news or not, or did you mean she's tax free?

Joinit, MOT is short for Ministry Of Transport test, ministry (govenrment) qualified testers test the van or car at a a listed (approved) garge to check it's roadworthness. Every year after the third year.

Hi all. In Sweden cars/vehicles older than 30 years are concidered a veteran vehicle. That means inspections (MOT) every other year(even though a van or a truck cost more to check than a car, so I don't save any money on that). The tax is substantially reduced, you only have to pay a registration fee (for me that meens saving £72,39 every year compared with my old Audi car taxes). And since I only paid £72,39 for my Transit that means I earned that cost alreadly the first year :D . Maybe some of my information can be modified by other Swedish members in here, but I think I got it right.
Thanks also to all of you for your kindness and help. I'm looking forward to future posts and contacts.

is that the manufacture date or first registration???

cause mine is tax free but registred on the 04.01.1973 and unless i have missed it there is no date of manufacture on the the new log book, so what is to stop people saying it was made in 1972 and getting the free tax???

it goes on manufactured date - you need the chassis number and evidence from fords or someone official to qualify for it!!! :D

The DVLA says:
Vehicle Registration Document/Certificate (V5C) – This must clearly show a date of registration or
manufacture of the vehicle prior to *1 January 1973. If the Registration Document/Certificate is not available
or if you think the age shown is incorrect, you will need to produce a dating certificate from a vehicle
enthusiasts club or evidence from the vehicle manufacturer.

and also:
Where a Registration Document/Certificate indicates that the vehicle was registered up to and including 7 January 1973,
we are prepared to allow entry into the Historic Class on the basis that the vehicle would have been constructed the
previous year.
