my 1996 Mk5 2.5Di 100lwb will do 65-70mph happy all day loaded, had it up to 82mph empty but gets a bit scary when a cross wind hits you and also you start to hear noise's that you dont hear at 65-70mph. the speedos are out coz when i'm doing 70mph on the needle the sat nav is saving i'm doing 66mph......................god knows

not really bothered how fast i go as long as she does'nt break down..

he does have something to say............no the gearbox wont allow any higher top speed on the mk6 even with 220 bhp 110mph is still the max! im sure they would be good for 125mph with a taller gear! anyone no of what gearbox to fit to get that?????????

Taller top gear on the MT75 Gearbox


The main problem with the MT75 gear box is that it is ideal for the 2.0 Ford engines, as they tend to use higher revs to achieve the speed compared to the 2.9 engines.
This creates a problem in so far as the top gear on the 2.9 XR4x4 is not high enough, with top gear ratio of 0.83 to 1.

Over the last few years the slower revving diesel engines have become more commonplace and due to this ford has made a new high gear for this application, by good luck and in true ford style, the MT75 gearbox has been modified with a higher top gear to allow the diesel cars to reach reasonable top speeds yet still retains the MT75 Gear box.

Here is where our good fortune comes in to place, if you could use the top gear from one of these gear box’s you would have a top gear ratio of 0.75 to 1. But will the parts fit?

To my surprise we found that when ford redesigned the MT75 they keep all the same ratios for 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th but changed 5th gear only.

With this in mind we investigated the part numbers for the countershaft bearings, (same as 4x4) then the syncro’s (same as 4x4) to check compatibility, all compatible. Below you can see the similarities between the gear ratios.

1st 3.61 to 1 3.61 to 1 3.61 to 1
2nd 2.08 to 1 2.08 to 1 2.08 to 1
3rd 1.36 to 1 1.36 to 1 1.36 to 1
4th 1.0 to 1 1.0 to 1 1.0 to 1
5th 0.83 to 1 0.75 to 1 0.75 to 1


This would change the ratio in 5th to reduce the engine revs at 70mph from 3039rpm down to 2746rpm, enough to give better economy at this speed and reduce engine noise. But if allowed to run flat out, would give a top speed of 178mph@7000rpm in place of the old top speed of 161mph@7000rpm. if you had the power and could rev to 8000 rpm you could get 204mph.
Dojj and i are using ours, they do present us with a small problem,,,, how to keep at the legal speed limit.



To modify your standard MT75 gearbox to the new gear ratio you would only have to change the countershaft (orange) and the 5th gear (yellow), the remaining parts would all be standard and compatible.

From here we spent some time at a ford parts center finding correct parts/numbers, after our picking up the parts from our local ford shop a day later and checking them we made a note of the part numbers for you.

Countershaft part number P F 1058879 cost £127.35+vat

5th gear part number P F 1058870 cost £30.35+vat

since finding the above we have found that some transmision re-builders will "press" off the 5th gear from the counter shaft and "press" on a new 5th gear, this could save you the cost of the counter shaft. i found this information from a local transmision specialist THREE D TRANSMISIONS OF ALDERSHOT, these people i found to be very help full to me and i am sure you could find them the same

Overdrive is a gear that is calculated at less than 1 to 1
ie; your 4th gear would normally be 1 to 1 and your 5th gear .83 or .75 to 1

Got 90 out of the van today coming back from dorchester (big hill though). Most I have had on the flat is 84 (indicated), my sat nav reckons that it over reads by about 3mph. Interestingly enough, the trip counter is pretty much spot on (I;ve had this in a couple of other cars - the manufacturers have the ability to make the odometer/trip meter fairly accurate but purposely make the speedo over read because of the law thing)

2000 120Di SWB Low Roof, 70hp, EGR bypassed & fuel pump tweaked (can go up hills at 70 now ), 4.56 axle.

mine will match the 110 as well! with just under 4k on the rev counter! some 125ps were fitted with a difrent diff mine is a 4.23 i think the other one was 4.54 i might have just got a little bit more out of mine but had to slow down! as there were to many bloody cars in the way!
