The cost of running?

Quick bit of help needed here guys...

I have touted myself out with my van over the past 2 weeks, and I am trying to compile a fair cost for the van and driver hire. This was for a theatre production that I was part of, so I dont really want to be billing for a full on 2 week van hire, as I`ll be getting paid for performing anyways.

I was trying to calculate the actual cost per mile of running the 2.5di, and I was hoping some of you may use yours on a business level, so I could work out what the average cost per mile would be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Work out the mpg + tax/mot/servicing costs pro rata then add a fraction for wear and tear?

well i just put in £41.98 and that got me 400 miles so 10p per mile is diesel i get paid 35p per mile when i use my van for work

Bloody good that is! Last engine was running at 16p per mile diesel, replacement seems slightly better.

Most courier companies around the London area charge between 65p for long runs and 80p short runs per one way mile. So Luke's 35p is pretty close to the middle ! I must admit I rarely use a per mile basis , I just work out roughly the cost, add how much I wanna earn from it. Then if I have to, I divide the total by the miles. (last job Maidstone to Heathrow was 77p)
Its not as unscientific as it sounds, I have one customer who regularly manages to F**k it up somehow, so he gets a 'screw-up' premium !

Hmm...this all seems a little subjective. I`ve been paid for the diesel seperately, so according to Lukes figures...it should be around 25p per mile (not including my time).

I worked out my annual cost to run the van as
tax+mot+insurance+repairs+wear&tear = £1070

divided by 10000miles = around 10p per mile.

So in theory, if I made it 30p per mile, that would be fair?

when i get my 35p all im getting paid for is my fuel and general increased wear! as my tax, ins etc. would allready be paid for irrelevantly of me using the van for work

Yea its an SWB 100 with a 70ps (I think). I'm trying to be as fair as possible with it on both sides. I mean, a van hire for the 2 weeks would have been nearly £400 + fuel. Obviously I dont want to charge that much, but I also dont want to put my time and the wear and tear on the van for nothing.

So with the mileage I did at 30p a mile would be £249.30. If I included the fuel in with that figure that would mean I was about £140 clear.

I'm just trying to get as precise and fair as I can with this, as I may start to do this more often if I can work out a reasonable fee.

Never mind what your van will do milage wise, if I was starting all over again I would do some research on the internet and in the papers/small ads and see what the market rate is. I know you want to be fair dfor this job, so by all means give them a good rate, but there is no use in underselling yourself.
