M.O.T advise please

Postby Stout lout » Sat Nov 11, 2006 3:11 pm

My Transit was registered in June 04 by the dealer. But not put on the road untill purchased by myself in Dec 04.
My question is this.Is the MOT due three years from the date of its registration or the date it was sold to me and put on the road. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Interesting. I would say it was from the date of registration, have you tried VOSA, or even you nearest friendly MOT station?

Nothing to do with this exactly, but it is due for MOT 3 years after first registration as everyone says.

My friend Andrew is heavily into Landrovers. After many years of rebuilding heaps, he went mad and bought an ex-mod 110. After insuring it on the vin he registered it. It came with a correct age related plate as it was 10 yrs old, and he declared the year of manufacture.

When the road tax reminder came, it didn't mention MOT to be presented, which he didn't and the disc was issued.

On querying this later the dvla office said no mot was required as it was liable for test, 3 years from FIRST registration, not date of manufacture, so it was 13 yrs old when it got its 1st test.

Imported vehicles need one as they are previously have been registered overseas, but ex-mod vehicles have only been registered with the mod, and not dvla, so the vin shows as a new(unregistered) vehicle with an old build date.

The next one he bought, he declared it as new, and was given a brand new registration.

I suppose it is just like the 51 plate police Smiley I saw, or any other vehicle that may have sat in a compound for years before being registered or driven on trade plates by dealers, who is to know ?

Our 1985 Mk2 is on an E reg because she was sat unregistered in a warehouse whilst the liquidation of the original owner was sorted out.

Well that did cross my mind, but there are other E reg Mk2s about, one is the sister to ours (we saw it before the previous owner mentioned it). There is a third luton, two chassis cabs that were car transoprters used abroead and a parcel van locally. I don't think there is an obligation to register any vehicle sold. It's been a long time since we bought new so can't tell you.

Fred is probably right Andy, there can't be an obligation to register every vehicle sold. Legally I suppose every vehicle sold in a retail sale will be registered. Also they want to get quarterly bonuses which are calculated on vehicles registered to keepers not sales.

As in Fred's case, another friend of mine used to be the buying dept of a local civil engineering firm. They agree a fleet price with Ford, the vans are delivered, then sit in the compound for a bit while they get modified for use. When they are needed on the fleet, he nipped down to the dvla with a V55 and registered it himself.

Those vehicles never saw the inside of a dealer as they had their own workshops, not sure if it would have had a pdi either as I think they bought them without warranty too when new as do some lease companies to keep the price down

He left there 3 yrs ago when it was bought out by a national firm and it went downhill, as he was only allowed to buy paperclips then.

Brand new vehicles are still subject to consumer law, if there was anything wrong, the dealer/manufacturer will still be liable for any faults.
