what V8 should i use

having done 2 24v transits its now time to go V8, forget Rover its not even in the running, want between 400 and 500bhp, manual if poss but don't mind auto, my choices so far are as follows:-

Ford Lightning/Harley Davidson 5.4 supercharged and box ( my number 1 choice )

Jaguar XKR/XJR engine and box out of a 2001 or newer. ( sort of a ford )( my number 2 choice )

Cobra 4.6 32v, bit under powered but still a choice. ( my number 3 choice )


Ford 302/351 or maybe 360 but not keen on the older engines

chevy 6.0 or newer 7.0, 7.0's are a bit pricy still.

Hemi 6.1 if i could find one.

BMW 4.0 and box

or any others you can think of


back axle will be either a 9" or an 8.8" ford and i think it will be 5 linked.

Daimler 2.5 V8 (SP 250)! Might be a bit underpowered!

And the real thing to go for is the 427 SOHC! The best engine Ford ever built!

So why go for a new engine

Rover v8's are expensive to rebuild better off going for a yank or the daimler like granadadriver said but with a blower or a small block chevy

if you dont care about the source of the engine, £ for£ nothing is gonna be a s usefull as the Chevy LS1 engine not dear to buy, very cheap to modify

would like to keep to a type of ford if poss but i do like the 6.0 400hp chevy engine and it is cheap.

really would like a modern engine (2001 or newer ) which is why the lightning and Jag engines are at the top of the list, both engines start at about 400bhp and can be tuned up, slightly better on fuel then the older ones as well but thats not the main concern.

Tell you what mate,friend of mine has a LS1 engine in a Cobra replica with barely legal exhaust system and it sounds AWESOME.
Realistically owt over 350BHP is well enough on our crap roads and the LS1 engine(as in Corvette)has 345BHP as standard,so i would personally go for a Chevy LS1.

something like a current 4.6 mustang engine would be good. maybe obtainable from a ctash write off? loads power and its a cracker of an engine. the same one they put in the mg zt 260 .
how about cadillac's northstar V8, another good one?
