Well, the insurance money came through today, so I bought a replacement for my poor wee Mk4.

It's a 99V Mk5 100 LWB Semi-Hi, in white. Pretty good all round, 108k miles. PAS, central locking electric windows, electric / heated mirrors.

I'll post pics tomorrow.

In the meantime, anyone know anything about fixing electric windows? Drivers side glass is loose, and not moving with the motor - motor 'clicks' when the switch is pressed. Is it as simple as lining the glass back up on some runners?

Arse It won't start today, at all.

It's turning the engine over easily, but it just won't fire. Any ideas?

No, it's not turbo.

Injector pipes? Crack? I'm an absolute imbecile when it comes to mechanical stuff. Any big pictures and easy instructions?

On the top of the engine are the injectors. they have a pipe linking each one and a metal pipe with a 17mm nut on. crack the nut off and undo it about a turn and crank the engine over. see if diesel come out here

OK, tried that, and there IS fuel coming through to there when I crank it over... Still not starting...

From what I have learnt recently, a diesel needs air+fuel+compression to run. You have seen fuel is getting in, so as guy88 says check air filter is clean and not blocked, then next step is compression test. Might be worth trying to bump start it if your by a hill or can get a tow. My advice may not be that good but i feel for you, have been in the same kind of position with cars I have bought

it has fuel, air. and is throwing white smoke

So it is either Timing or compression. Generally if its compression a sniff will get it going and once it is warm it will start fine (im NOT recomending easystart as a long term thing).

Check the timing first

did you see it start from cold when you bought it

like jon says drag it round the block - if that wont start it theres something seriously wrong checking the timing is fairly easy -worth a try
