Road tax question

Wonder if anyone can help with a small dilemma concerning road tax?

Picking up a van about 260 miles from home in a couple of weeks time - on a Saturday. Won't be getting there until mid afternoon. The van has 12 months test on it but no tax. I know that with my luck I'll be picked up on every police camera with plate recognition cameras on the way home, and a little alarm will go off and tell them it's not taxed! But how can I tax it on a Saturday afternoon when the Post offices will probably all be closed in that neck of the woods?

Is there a way around this that won't involve me going to court?

Can you tax online if you're not yet the registered keeper of it? I was planning on going down armed with insurance docs, licence etc, and then taking the tear off bit of the V5 to the Post Office - but then dawned on me that they'd probably be shut!

You could post your insurance docs to him in advance with a cheque for the tax and ask him to go to the post office on sat morning and tax it for you.

How far out of tax is it? Saturday is the first of the month, get a receipt with 1 sept on it and make sure the old keeper puts 1 sept on the V5 and tax it on Monday. If you get pulled, show them the receipt and tell them you are going to get the tax. The tax will back date to 1 sept anyway, and it's not worth the Police prosecuting you for having no tax. It's not in your name any way .
