Heater

Postby sc_BK » Sun Nov 11, 2007 11:15 pm

Thinking about a 2nd battery, and wiring in with a simple battery isolater switch. Then getting something like a 60w 1ft tube heater (240v), which should last the whole night on the 2nd batt.

You reckon a wee tube heater would be enough to keep the chill off the van overnight?

It'll certainly be quieter than a fan assisted version :!:

Have you got one to try :?:

Ordered one now, will just have to see what it's like when it gets here

Now just need to find the cheapest place for a 2nd batt!

How does a 240v heater work on 12v?

A 12v 60w bulb will give out nearly the same heat!

Not enough to notice I would think.

Got the heater t'other day, gotta say it does get pretty hot I reckon it should keep the cold off the van. Cheapest battery I could find was £38+VAT from a local motor factors, ford wanted £90+!
Also I asked the parts man at fords about the 2nd battery fixing kit, he had no idea what I was on about and didn't even believe me that the mk6 battery isn't under the bonnet
So I think I'll just make up something outta some scrap to hold it in place

There IS a tsb from around 2003 time that details the fitment of the 2nd battery

it has all the finis numbers for the cables, clamps and vents, but it doesn't include a split charge or isolator in the circuit.

Aye still got some 25mm cable left and bought a rally style cut off switch. The plan is to wire the inverter through the 2nd batt, leave the switch on most of the time, then when I'm parked up overnight flick it over to keep the main batt full.

Forgot to buy clamps to go on the battery posts though

Also, is there an easy way to remove the drivers seat so I can access the seat box easily?

The seat tracks will unbolt off the base and allow you to look straight down on the battery location.

When you fit the second battery, make sure you fit a vent to it so the gasses produced when charging are allowed to exit the vehicle. They are flammable!
