cold mornings

when you start your van these cold mornings do you drive of straight away (i do) or do you let it run for twenty mins while you clean windows etc like my arsehole of a neighbor with his di i keep telling him it dont warm up ticking over --over to you??

the di ,s i have allways found never warm up for ages, even all the diesels i have are the same ,its a pain but the only way to get the temp up is to drive!

i leave mine warming up for 5 mins and it is like a sauna in there dont know why cos our other vans takes ages to warm up maybe a different heater?? still its nice to get in a warm van

100ps do you have a bulkhead in yours? - my mate had a brand new jumbo - just took too long to warm up so we ended up buying a bulkhead off ebay and driving 150miles to fetch it!!

Hmmm, interesting.
My TD also takes an age to warm up, at least on the gauge. I still like to run it for a minute or so just to make sure the oil is running freely. I think this is especially important for the turbo bearing which is completely reliant on the oil pressure. Prehaps I should fit an oil pressure gauge? If you really want to warm up the engine you should have a water heating Eberspacher. Back in the day Rover used to have an optional mains powered imerssion heater in the engine that you could use in your garage, not such a bad idea.

ye i have a bulkhead a 20mm thick plywood one that is carpetted on the cab side extra warmth

realy ment for the benefit of the engine it dont a cold engine any good ticking over you need to get the oil warm- drive it !!

di ,s are normally very strong within reason ,look at ice cream vans sitting all day ticking over!

so long as you have good oil pressure it wont do any harm to warm up a DI on tickover....in fact less harm than driving off straight away, I think you neighbour is taking the Pi$$ a little(ok a lot!) though with his 20mins.

To be honest i never have enough time in the mornings i'm in and off!!
just dont thrash it till its warned a bit!! - got to apply a bit of common sence
the only thing i dont do is switch of a turbo engine while its revving i allways let it idle - just to slow the turbo down as much as poss - dont want it spinning like a tw*t with no oil feed!!!

I HAVE A PETROL ENGINE IN MY VAN , I HAVE NEVER BEEN INTO THE TURN THE KEY AND OFF YOU GO , I HAVE ALWAYS GIVEN THE VAN 5 MINUTES OR SO TICKING OVER TILL I DRIVE OFF , I ALWAYS FELT THIS WAS BETTER FOR THE ENGINE ????

iv'e always believed that an engine reaches normal running temp quicker under load (driveing) and sustains more wear ticking over from cold petrol or diesel ???

Everyone is right in a way here, a diesel should not be left to tick over as they don't like be off load, neither should it be put under heavy load straight away.

Your best bet is to just take it easy till it begins to warm up, you will find leaving the Di to tick over to warm up it will take near on an hour!

i'm pulling off the the drive within a 3 opr 4 seconds of letting go of the key !!

low revs and nice and steady though, dodging the parked cars through the ice. You feel what the engine wants and dosn't want i think.

takes about 4 or more miles before the needle is showing fully warm.
