Windscreen chips

Postby sc_BK » Wed Oct 08, 2008 8:55 pm

Got one today, it's about 5mm or so and directly in the line of view, though not too annoying.

According to adverts for autoglass if I leave it it'll crack, what's the average price for getting a repair? (...not from autoglass)

It cost me my £75 excess to replace mine for my MOT. Think chip repairs are free ? :D

Yeah just had a chip repair done on my old passat, got it done free on my insurance, think most insurers do it for free now. Think you have to get it done pretty quickly before any crap or moisture gets into the chip.

autoglass want you to get it repaired because its there biggest money spinner

remember that if you do get it repaired it can always get worse whilst being repaired, and that the whole idea of the repair is seal it and make it stronger NOT to make it better visually ( if it does get better visually its a bonus)

if it does annoy you visually i would go for replacement( hmm heated windscreen lol)

Don't think they're open at 9pm Neil :)

Also has anyone had any experience of the DIY repair kits?

Yeah i heard an autoglass radio advert yesterday.
said some girl got a chip and it turned into a crack.
then they made it sound like she was in a horror film!
basically trying to scare silly girls that don't have a clue
into using there insurance policy.
it's wrong

Couldn't agree more! Had a weird semi circular crack on the extreme left of the windscreen for about 7 years. Went through as many MOTs, got to the stage I had put the tax disc over it to disguise it  ! Bit still it soldiered on, until some driver leaned on it a bit too much when cleaning the windscreen (yeah right) and it had to go.
