Total weight on a new shape 90

Have a 350 new shape tranny, am I correct in saying the total weight including caravan is not to be more than 3,5 tons, that be 3500kilos, caravan weights in at 1300kgs that leaves me with 2,2 tons is that correct...nothing better than making sure and do you know what the normal payload is on a 90ps rear wheel drive medium roof and wheel base.

according to ford brochure payload on your van is 1602kg and trailer to be no more than1500kg i.e all up weight of van + contents+ trailer should be no more than 4500kg hope this helps

The gross train weight should be on a plate somewhere, I know on the Mk5 it's on the passenger foot well.

if i remember right it is on the passangers door shut on the mk6

If thats the weight limit then I well within my limits, which is good thing doing this really long trip

Find the VIN plate on the B pillar, you'll see 4 weights in kilos

first will say 3500, thats your Gross Design Weight, in other words, the van, you your load and your fuel can't exceed 3500kgs

under that, there is another weight around 5200 to 5700 depending on your vehicle, thats the Gross Train weight which is the one your after.

Again that figure includes the fully loaded vehicle and fully laden trailer...the trailer also needs to be equipped with brakes to take advantage of the full towing capacity.

The other 2 figures are the front and rear axle weights, they have no real meaning for you tbh.

If your are running at above 3500 kgs with a commercial vehicle you need a tachograph fitted and working, plus an operators licence to run vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, but because this is a caravan I don't know how you stand ? john l

This is only the case if you are towing for commercial use, ie profittable gain!

Agree as above, also newish drivers are unaware of towing regulations, they can only tow up to 750kg, I wonder how many people know that, having a class 2 license covers that so I dont have a problem there but many others will

so true i knew i was limited but i tow a 2.5ton tipping trailer full of rubble and rubbish from jobs to our skip and i have been stopped twice now by the old bill both times were traffic cars and they were only interested in the number plate being the wrong one they didnnt seem to know that at 18 i shouldnt be towing such a big trailer

Class 2 HGV if the test was passed after January 1997 still only entitles you to tow 750 KG, this was done to stop 26 tonne rigid lorries towing 7.5 tonne draw bar traillers. The only way to tow more is to obtain the E catergory for towing which reuires an extra test or just go and get a full class 1 HGV licence.

Also the 750 KGS limit is the plated weight of the trailer, so if you have a trailer that is plated to 1tonne but empty weights 400KGS it still can't be towed!

so i am totally illegal then our trailer is plated at 2432kg so is my dad LEGAL then as he passed his test back in the 60's or is this still to heavy this to me is all to confusing

Your Dad is legal he can tow up to 3500KGS but like you say you're kinda illegal.

ok good to know thanks for that still if traffic cops didnt realise that i was illegal there shouldnt be to much of a problem

If you do alot of towing, it's gotta be worth doing your test!
