Oh and the MPG difference between the Granada and the Transit wasn't a huge amount of difference..yes it was slightly better but not by a lot. I think to be honest my Granada was actually good on MPG but the Transit having the aerodymanics of a house brick doesn't help, MK2's would be even worse. it is your call but to swap to a Transit/Van from a car driving is a huge difference, although I dislike from a security point of view rear windows, as a first vehicle I would reccomend getting one with glass in the back, offset junctions are awkward as you have to position yourself differently to how you learnt with driving lessons, you will quickly learn how to reverse very much better than you did whilst learning since you have to use the mirrors as you can't look over your shoulder. This is general help as many Transits have extra side windows etc.
