Petrol is the way to go as you will not get insurrance for the diesel unless you have very very deep pockets. I am a heck of a lot older than you and went from a 2.8 Granada Estate to a 2.0 petrol SWB, tranferred full no claims and it was still more than the Granada to insure, I got a quote for the diesel and it was even more, ok ignore the commercial use part...since it will carry more than a Granada estate but for the power on the Granada to drop in engine size etc to pay more is crazy. my original policy was NOT a protected no claims but upon the 1st renewal this changed , 2 insurrance companies later (and 2 transits later now on a diesel) and I still have the protected NC's. I haven't tried to transfer the NC's so I have no idea if they will honour these years (15yrs) if I was to take a car insurrance policy.
Oh and the MPG difference between the Granada and the Transit wasn't a huge amount of difference..yes it was slightly better but not by a lot. I think to be honest my Granada was actually good on MPG but the Transit having the aerodymanics of a house brick doesn't help, MK2's would be even worse. it is your call but to swap to a Transit/Van from a car driving is a huge difference, although I dislike from a security point of view rear windows, as a first vehicle I would reccomend getting one with glass in the back, offset junctions are awkward as you have to position yourself differently to how you learnt with driving lessons, you will quickly learn how to reverse very much better than you did whilst learning since you have to use the mirrors as you can't look over your shoulder. This is general help as many Transits have extra side windows etc.

I tried to get my daughter, 23 at the time, insured on my 2.3 Scorpio estate, they (Norwich Union) wouldn't cover her. But I put her on my '03 Transit 2.4 Turbo Diesel (1 year old at the time),£80.00 extra with..... Norwich Union..... go figure !!

Norwich union are just picky about who they insure!

Why do you want a rev counter?

I dont really know. I just want to know what the engine is doing and make sure I am not reving it to high, as all transits seem to be reved high.

Yeah you don't really need a rev counter then, and you wont be over revving it.

Prob up to 5 or 6K, as I will keep it a while and my dad wants me to be content with what I get so as to keep me off a motorbike. His freind recently fell off one and was in hospital for a while.

agreed should be compulsery for all new drivers to have to ride a 125 for a year before allowed in a car - then there would be less accidents

your a lucky lad if your ole man is going to fork out for your first car/van, whatever it is, personally id go for a older one and collect the bumps and scrapes which you no doubt will.. then upgrade after a year.
