There was that big storey in the papers about 3 years ago, the polics chased a woman down the M11 for an hour, even had a helecopter out that got pictures of her eating an apple while driving, the judge kicked the case out and really laid into the constabulary concerned as they had spent over 40 grand on the chase just to catch somone eating an apple
They even had the video from the helecopter showing her eating the apple as eveidence in court
TBH i totaly agree with the phone ban, whilst i know a large percentage of people can quite easyly talk on the phone and drive (it's a matter of prioratising, you make the conversation suffer by concentrating on the road more than the the conversation) you have to make the laws down to the level of the total twonks who do 10 MPH down road without realising they are going so slow because they are on the dam phone!
I meen when i used to deliver round the west end i regulary used to read a map, drink a drink and fly round the place with out crashing, some people i know have to turn the radio down when they come to a roundabout so they can concentrate on the road and that person is (beleive it or not) a friken driving instructor

i have also seen some sat navs stuck in the middle of the screen on some of our forien members and they get away with them in the middle of the view and i am shure of them follow the line on the sat nav and not the road!

Eagle eyed b*stard caught me from about 100m away with phone under chin..$235 and 3 demerit points..now I use my phone in top pocket with loudspeaker..works a treat.

I just can't see the problem with mobile phones or the law. How difficult can it be? If you really have to use one just buy a hands free kit. Mine cost £20 (its not blue tooth and has a wire connected to my earpiece/microphone) and its easier to hear than when I have the phone against my ear.

I used to have one of those hands-free setups with my old phone, but the wire kept on getting in the way, so I got a Sony Ericsson phone with a Bluetooth earpiece, no problems now.

Trouble is pulling over is still an offence as you in control of the vehicle even though you are not moving. Crazy I know but purely depends on how much of a jobsworth the policeman is.

well i use the phone alot and i have a bluetooth sony ericson and its fantastic, but i doo take it off when i am not useing it ,i am not like some of these people that walk round with them on !

ive got a hands free kit for my van but the problem is i do mostly local short journeys and my phone stays in my pocket - if i put it in the holder every trip i would forget to take it out garanteed i dont do a lot of chatting on the phone and 99% of my recieved calls are call outs from work (im on call 24/7) and its a simple - answer phone and say "right i'll come in" it takes me longer to fiddle about switch the hands free on and plug the phone in than it does to just answer the phone

What I cant understand is why dont people get a hands free system, that way your phone is in a place you can see it, so you can see the time and who has phoned, you can have alot of numbers preset so all you have to do is press 1 number, this as far as i know is quite legal.And there quite cheap as well, some of the money some of you spend on your vans, on bits and bobs is much more , and the other thing is is that if it is just a fine and no popints, what would be the incentive for someone who would rather pay 100 pounds over a gain, because they have olot of money you can use your phone but if you havent then you cant, and which one is more likely to knock someone over or go in the back of a stopped bus, it could be either, there fore it is important not to have a system which is open to abuse if you can afford it, thats the difference between holland and britain, holland are harsh but treat people fairly, britain is harsh on the poor and easy on the rich.
What luke says is true, but the point is is that it is the law, i am apposed to alot of laws that i have to obey we all are, that is how it is, So whilst i sympathise with the problem of needing a phone in and out of the van as luke has bought up, I dont think you should just ignore the law in this instance. If you do then you cant be surprised if you have a penalty to pay if you get caught, or the loss of licence through points, or the increase in your insurance, or a spell in prison where you will have plenty of time to think about how you could have sorted your phone problems by putting yourself out a bit, which is what will happen if it can be proved it was you using your phone which caused the death of some poor b*****d innocently waiting to cross the road as you come round the corner mount the curb and run him over. Is that clear enough, its not on, the amount of near misses i see through this problem, i have even had people that are so engrossed in the ir call that i have stopped even though i had the right of way because it is obvious that if you dont there is going to be an accident, and they have been oblivious to the situation at all. Why should i as someone who doesnt use a phone whilst driving, have to be more vigilant with the way i drive to compensate for the lack of attention paid to the road by the phone users???
