My mk5 is never going to be a looker which isn't great when you pull up outside someone's house.

I'll keep putting money aside for a newer van

Reasons to keep the Mk5

1) Its one of the last vehicles that you'll be able to repair forever, unlike the MK 6, 7, 8, 9, etc etc,
Because MOT requirements will soon make them nonviable.....

2) Parts and panels for the MK 5 are cheap....

3) You can convert it to petrol/lpg so will be as cheap as diesel to run, and more importantly will get you of the treadmill of having to change to Euro 6, Euro 7 etc compliant engines b*llocks .....On our local news last night, they're talking of introducing a LEZ in Hull ......

4) Finally turning up at your customers in a smart classic van is dam cool ......

Just to add some sums .....

I bought my MK5 new in 99 for 22k .......I've spent the last couple of years having the bodywork done up and converted to a 3 litre automatic......I still have further work to do, but I'm aiming to create a fast quiet comfortable motorway cruiser, which will be greener than a MK8 when converted to LPG .....

Unfortunately I'm not mechanically gifted .......So have to pay, which to achieve the above, will cost about 10k......so a total bill for 17 years motoring 32k.....which sounds a lot....BUT, if I'd gone the route of many and changed every 3 years for a new van then I suspect I'd of spent over a 100k ......

Funny thing is I've just retired....so no longer need a fast quiet comfortable motorway cruiser ........

well the little van I have now got that 4 years ago for five three I think it was had 70k on it now its got 156k and probably get another year out of the old spunker then sell it for, got to be 1 1.5 thousands of shelkels
so probb a gwand a year or less
spend more than that a week on spesh and prozzers

My first mk5 van cost me roughly £-10 a year if you only consider purchase and sale price...

Every mk5 and mk3 I have had (and got as far as selling either whole or in bits) has made me a profit.

2 of my current mk5 vans cost me £250 to buy (had 1 18 months and the other 4 years), the other was £350.

If you just look at depreciation... mk3/4/5 are hard to beat. Good mk5s (especially turbos) are now creeping up in value
