Road tax question

the answer was simple.. you could of insured it today got the paper work in the morning and just taxed it m8.. if you drive it with no tax but tax on monday you can still get done for no tax if stopped as there was no tax on it when you get pulled. i know i had this a few years ago and got done coming from a m.o.t centre but to late to tax till the next morning. But it is upto you what you do.

that is allowed - ive been stopped on more than one occasion for no tax while i was driving to a pre arranged mot and ive never been done how can they expect you to drive home with tax if you cant drive there tax

The van has 12 months test on it but no tax.

Book it in for an MOT.

It already has a full mot.

that doesnt matter, book it in somewhere near to you, and set off earlier so you will be back for a reasonable time ie 3.30 and when you get home, dont turn up for the mot though

then if you do get picked up by cameras then you could say you had every intention of doing it but due to heavy traffic the garage was closed because yoiu were too late

The MOT isn't an issue, it's the tax.

Your allowed to drive a untaxed vehicle to / from a MOT testing station. ( or to a garage to carry out work required for a MOT test ) I think thats the point Smooth Hound is trying to make.


If it was me I wouldn't have any problems driving without tax so long as your planning to tax it on Monday. As long as you have Insurance/MOT/ and your roadworthy thats all the police are worried about. Driving without tax is usually considered a civil offense and any prosecution would have to be taken up by the DVLA. Chances are even if you are caught, they will just ask to see proof of tax within 7 days, if your really unlucky you will get a 60 quid fine.

Ive taxed mine at a superstore on a saturday afternoon!!! Waitrose in Southend has a late PO in it, look them up on the net!!!

Wow - lots of replies!

First off - I'm not collecting until next weekend, and I have every intention of being insured when I do! I too thought that the MOT test ploy only worked if the test centre was a "reasonable distance" from where you set off - and I guess 260 miles could be stretching the point a bit!

I can't really go earlier - well I could but it will cost four times the amount on the train - seems there are only some trains each day where you can book in advance and save a lot of money - £80 instead of £24 for pre booked. The only pre book options that could get me there earlier would either mean taking a day off work, or enduring an overnight 13 hour journey time with 6 changes on the way!

I reckon what I'll try to do is get the fella to send me the tear off bit of the V5 - which I can then use to go get some tax up here next week once I've sorted the insurance.

If he gives you the details of the vehicle you will be able to tax it online like most people on here have said. I wouldnt risk drivin it home all that way with no tax, just asking for trouble. If the nast VOSA stop you they will probally put a prohabitation notice on it, meaning you cant move it. They are really fussy.
Also if you are involved in an accident your insurance company wont pay out as no tax and you will be liable...

I was led to beleive if you tax a vehicle online unlike taxing at a postoffice you can`t tax and update new keeper at the same time. The paper tax disc would be sent to the address already on the logbook, so you would have to rely on the seller sending the disc to you once he receives it. I guess if you do that though, and the poilce check that the tax is paid, you`d probably get away with it If you get a jobsworth copper though he could do you for not displaying the disc.
I was also told if the vehicle is sold to a dealer using the trade section of the logbook, then you can`t tax it online as the vehicle is unregistered.
This is all just what I`ve been told though, when I wanted to tax my van when I bought it, not sure how true it all is.

You cannot use the service if you’ve recently changed your Insurance Company.

My previous Transit was insured through CIS, as this one will be - but since I sold my last truck around Christmas -ish - my car insurance has been with someone else.

Lets hope the tear off bit from the V5 gets here in the post
