Above I said I had lost 5 years of a No Claims, well I have found out where they went. It would seem that different Insurrance Companies have different rules when it comes to No Claims.
Company A will show up to 7 years as the maximum
Company B will show up to 9 years as the maximum

So if you have 9 years No Claims and you switch from Company B to Company A then you will only show 7 years No Claims so you have 'lost' 2 years. So people bear this in mind when you begin to jump around from Company to Company, if possible keep old documents etc to prove when you were insured from etc as in time it will come to pass that there will be a Company that will offer fantastic rates BUT only if you have more than 10 years No Claims.

My present company only show me as having 8 years as the last company was a 7 year only, so the transfer put me automatically on the maximum discount but shows my No Claims as 8 years, which is the maximum discount if I was on 8 or 9 years but they have changed their settings to go to 9 years but it doesn't help me with my 'lost' years. It is a little like the next age for me to reach to get a further discount is 50 so until then I pay the same as either a 40 or 49 year old.

I have a 1996 Ford Escort Van 1.8TD and I tried using a company I work for's English address as the address and it gave me a quote of £1216.45 TPFT!! I think it's something to do with my name.... they're just out to rip me off no matter what.

Just tried the evaninsurance one with my correct Northern Ireland address and details and it came out at £750.00 for the Escort or £1126 for the Escort and the Transit. I think I'll go with that!

Jeez, I don't think I could afford to live in NI. Have you looked into trader's insurance? You don't have to have premises, try giving the UK address you said.

Traders insurance over here in NI would set you back £5k-10k depending on the variables.

£750 is the cheapest I can find for the Escort van and when you add that to the £1,100 for my MG ZS it's a lot of money for nothing. I've never had an insurance claim to date and have no convictions at all.

I'll probably go with the evaninsurance and add the Transit at a later date. It's so hard working for yourself starting a new business - insurance and rates are a killer!

while we're on the topic of insurance...

I saw this on the bbc website about cheaper insurance for young drivers if you don't drive between 11pm and 6am

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5244166.stm

It doesn't say if its also for vans but it might be useful for someone

I wonder how that works? The police will only know you don't have insurance if they actually see the policy/cover note. It makes a mockery of the insurance register, as you are either on it or you're not, it doesn't mention what type of cover you have.

According to the article you have a device installed which tells the insurance company details of your journey and if you drive between 11pm and 6am you get charged £25 each time. I assume that means you are insured at night and if you only drive at night once or twice a year it'd still work out cheaper overall.

It doesn't say what happens if someone else drives your car at night on their own insurance.

I have to admit, It does sound like a lot of hassle but then I'm too old anyway :)
I suppose if you've just passed your test and they are quoting you over £1000 for your insurance then a 40% reduction is a lot of money

I couldn't be bothered with a system like that... I deliver Chineses at the weekend and work till 11.30-midnight so it wouldn't suit me anyway.

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.
