554 miles on 74.2 litres = 34mpg. Can't be bad for a MWB semi-high roof. Most journeys are 5 miles or less and on country lanes. :D

something dawned on me today about this thread, its not mpg you want to be concerned about, its £ per mile.

my 1994 mk4 2.0efi petrol, 4.11 diff, did 60 quid of petrol in 305 miles at a constant 90-100mph, i.e. flat out most of the time, laden with my 675cc triumph sportsbike, an overnight bag, trackday kit and a few tools.

just done the same journey in my 2000 mk5 2.5Di, 4.56 diff, 60quid of diesel did 295 miles at a constant 70-80mph, which was also flat out, but this time the van was unladen.

not much in it in £ per mile, but the diesel was so noisy i had a proper headache when i got home, whereas i was fine in the petrol. and the journey took over half an hour longer in the diesel.

when you add it all up non turbo diesels dont make much sense as a motorway van, ok i could have driven it at lower crusing speed, say 65, but its still worse at that speed than the petrol is at say 70-80.

it was so unpleasant that halfway home i found myself trying to figure out if i can swap the engine etc from the petrol to the new van over the christmas break!

load the Di van up and it will still do the same mpg, thats the whole point of a deisel engine for commercial use, also, try soundproofing the cab, should be better............

ah but my van is only fully loaded about one week in ten, so for me it aint much or a payoff! i'd rather limp around in a fully loaded petrol on those odd occasions than lose the performance and comfort the rest of the time :!:

to be fair i should add the petrol only does about 200 miles to £60 around town, and the diesel always seems to do around 300 whatever the driving, but most of mine is on the motorway....

What you need to do if fill your van to the top drive around then refill to the top again then use THIS to calculate the MPG :D

also include any relevent details ie. body type, engine size type of driving and if you think your speedo is accurate

hopefully we should build up an idea of what mpg to expect from what van :!:

Do not post questions or related topics in this thread, they will be removed - this thread is just for the MPG your van has done :!:

2001 Transit 280 SWB 100hp diesel:
Over a 1,200 mile distance I managed to get 37.65 mpg, which I'm quite pleased with.
This involves a fair bit of motorway work and I tend to stick to 55 - 60 mph, but the van is always loaded up when I drive it. (Mobile disco.)
