Currently has a 2.5DI turbo with a *mechanical* fuel pump adjusted to get through a sympathetic MOT. I have to drive very light footed to get near 30mpg; average 25-27. On previous banana engine, I towed a 1.6 petrol astra on a car trailer across the country and got better mileage than I'd have got from the astra - about 34 - but at 50mph.
With a little adjustment to the fuel pump, same engine tows itself and 2 tonnes trailers up never ending spanish 5% autovia hills at constant 50 mph. Needs two electric fans to keep it from going out the other end of the red though! Overall fuel consumption on such very long journeys about the same!
