If you chassis is damp you will just be trapping the moisture in by putting the oil on top of it, if its dry however the sooner the better.

I always use the pressure washer every time I wash the van....and my arches are still there, when I first got her I used the pressure washer and then a wire brush....and then pressure washed again, then I painted under the arches with 3 layers of paint, I dont treat under the arches now as anything you put on just gets salt and road muck stuck to it, like I said I pressure wash every time so I would just be blasting off expensive products.

I think its all about personal preference, different products and different methods...doesnt matter, the main thing is you do something to protect them

Thanks Rover! Useful advice. I think I will use the waxoil for all the difficult to reach bits and inside doors & panels. Then paint everything else underneath. So... what paint do you use?

I used bright red 'Smoothrite' from the 'Hammerite' range.

It gets everywhere so if you're doing it on your drive lay some cardboard out first, same goes for the Waxoyl...

Just completed the waxoyl job, found that mixing in 1/5 new engine oil and 1/5 diesel helped the stuff to 'creep' into those hard to reach areas.
This mix still sets so it was'nt dripping all over the road and was atomising much better.
Using a powerful compressor helped.
I'm going to keep a close check on its performance and let you know how it's doing.

Doing nothing is not an option here as we are knee deep in slurry and rock salt. Not the best underbody coating!

Dont forget that pressure washing is best done when you've been out in the rain, or driven through a few streams, to soften all the crap under the arches. The neighours will think you're mad, washing a van in the rain, but hey, you drive a Transit, and they probably think you're mad already!

I'm a little bit unsure on this dark art. Haynes suggest steam cleaning and coating with a wax spray type stuff. I have a pressure washer but is that ok or have I got to use a steam cleaner (not a wall paper steamer but a steam jetty type thing)? I know Rover said he uses a pressure washer but is that a ok or should I look to borrowing a steam cleaner?
Then I guess I let it dry and spray this Waxoil stuff all over the underside.

I have a set of ramps and axle stands which is what I'd use to raise it up. I understand that I need to make sure its dry underneath, I am guessing I could use a heated air blower to dry it if its damp underneath when I want to do it. Could I also use an air blower to dry the waxoil to speed up the process?
