Well folks, as from 1st July, if you use less tha 2500 litres per year you no longer need to register or pay duty.....just keep simple records

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/briefs/excise-duty/brief4307.htm

That now makes it worth doing, 20 litres from the cash and carry is £8.00

Therefore 2500 litres = 549 Gallons

549 Gallons @ 30 Miles Per Gallon = 16,470 miles

Therefore that equates to 16,470 miles per year,of running on veggie :D :D :D

This about the production of biodiesel, not using chip fat in your vehicle.

Changed the fuel filter on my 2.5 banana engine today & straight away added 20 litres of pure veggie oil to a virtually empty tank & didn't notice the slightest bit of difference :D

Its a 97 Tranny with 135k on the clock so I'll change the fuel filter again in about 500 miles & see how I get on.

Exempt producers are also required to keep simple production records (date of production and quantity produced, in litres) on an ongoing basis, and retain these for six years.

Reads to me like its no longer illegal to use fuel without paying duty, provided that you don't use too much (no way i'll use 2,500 litres in a year).

That says nothing about using fuel, it says lots about producing it though!

Get it from the wholesalers then, they should be used to buying it in bulk, and it should be cheaper.

Actually I thought you were right until I saw this (posted by ashbyspannerman in the tech section)

STOP PRESS *** Revised June 2007 Revenue & Customs biofuels simplification - Change in the way UK vegetable oil fuel duty is collected was passed in Parliament on 8th June 2007 and will come into effect on 30th June 2007. *** STOP PRESS
Earlier this year Revenue & Customs proposed:

A de minimis production level of 2,500 litres per annum below which producers would not need to enter premises, submit returns or pay duty (Please note: we seem to have many customers who are getting confused by Revenue & Customs use of the word "producers", we have checked and it has been confirmed that USERS and PRODUCERS can be treated, for these purposes as THE SAME),

Had a good blast in my transit today to see how it runs on SVO. Its a 2.5d banana engine with Bosch FIP & 165k on the clock. The previous owner admitted not looking after it & this was substantiated by an air filter that looked like it had been barbequed!

I've fitted a new air filter, new oil/filter & fuel filter & in keeping with my policy of in for a penny in for a pound, filled it with pure SVO (KTC from Makro) & went for a blast on the motorway.

The van pumps out a lot of white smoke on start up (which I expected) but soon ran clear(ish). The only problem occurs with foot to the floor acceleration which results in excessive white smoke (not very pleasent for those behind me). It sits nicely at 70 with no excess smoke, the problem is just with accelerating.

Is this likely to continue or is it possible that the engine is just clearing out all the cráp from years of neglect?

Try mixing it 50/50 with diesel and reduce the diesel until the white smoke comes back, then take the mix up a bit, sounds like trial and error.
