One thing your forgetting in the BIO/Diesel argument is the tax difference. If every one started to change to BIO the tax take would go down due to the concessions to BIO. How long do you think it would be before the Treasury up the tax & insisted on licensing home brew. Never been a government prepared to let us keep our money once they had found a way of getting it. Remember income tax was only introduced to pay for the Napoleonic Wars

1, What do you tell the insurance when they ask petrol or diesel ?
2, Can this be stored safely? ( i have 3 kids who are in and out of my garage! )
3, I trust MrPUK's opinion as he does know what he is on about and would like to know what kinds of problems could occur if using BIO / Veg oil / Sun oil. Would it be irrepaiable or would it be a clean out of the fuel system and carry on?

Cheers for any info as i am considering it if there are no serious comebacks!

Your van is registered as diesel, can't think why the insurance company would be interested.

It's no more unsafe than regular diesel, and if you use veg oil, well we can eat that so very safe.

Yes it's registered as diesel BUT as i would have to declare the use to the tax man, i thought maybe a declaration to the insurance company as they could void a claim ( any excuse ! ) if i was using a van registered as diesel yet using oil as you are asked wether the vehicle is petrol / diesel when they quote?

So am i right in thinking nobody but the tax man must be informed when ( and if! ) i start using it? Does anybody know what kind of problems could occur as i dont mind an extra fuel filter change and de gunk but having to start swapping / rebuilding engines and fuel pumps can end up causing my wallet problems!

Was in Netto yesterday and their veg oil is now 98p a Litre, so I am wondering if any bother caused is now worth it, for the 20p saved! Netto is a cheap as anywhere, so it's a good indication of price.

Sorry to all about ranting off in my last post.
Now back to topic, regards the BIO, as there seems at least 2 peeps on the thread that are going to try.

To those peeps, please be certain that your motor will take BIO, we are not talking straight veg oil from the supermarket here, we are talking processed veg oil, that comes out as BIO Diesel. It is as good as diesel in many motors, but not all. If you are going to try, research it first. Don't assume that BIO is the same as diesel if you are buying it from a forecourt. I say this because diesel is refined to a standard for the manufacturers engines (i.e all of them) whereas BIO is manufactured by independent processors and sell this to forecourts (all independent) or from their own premises. There is a BIO standard EN14214, but you will struggle to see it displayed.

If you are planning on going down the BIO route then you either purchase your BIO from a recommended source, i.e where trucks and coaches fill up, as you are pretty safe that if they are taking 500litres a time then you will be OK. I used a trusted source when I started out, he displays that EN cert as well, but it's all change in BIO, prob isn't even valid and the processors are working to a new one. Or, make your own! DIY and you know what you are putting in and getting out, there are lots of resources on the web to achieve this.

Personally my story is this. So far have completed nearly 3,000 miles using BIO with a 2.5 DI with a Bosch pump. In the early stages I ran 50/50 with diesel, then went down in the diesel percentage. In the last 3 weeks I have been 80/20. Last week I thought it warm enough to go straight 100 BIO. She ran fine to start, bit lumpy in the morning (4AM) apart from that great. Then on Thursday she lost power on the motorway at approx 4.30AM, kept going, although not a tad over 50. Pulled the fuel filter at work to have a look, nothing nasty really. Left work with new fuel filter, all normal (it was warm very warm though, for April). Spoke to my mate who runs a Mitubushi Warrior (03 plate) on the same stuff as me (and has done so for around 2,000 miles) and his filter was watered. He decided to drain his tank etc. This was a bad supply, we had both been to the same garage and the result, lazy processing, too much water.

I do see where MR Puk comes from. Diesel is Diesel, BIO is hit and miss. Although make your own and your good, as long as your motor can do it, be careful.

Me,for now, still on BIO, although this will be short lived as I am soon moving up to an 04 Tranny and I don't think BIO sits well with that! Although if anyone has seen or heard of a 03/04 tranny jumbo hi roof crew cab running LPG, let me know,otherwise, it's the diesel.

i'll stick with LPG at 55p/litre, as soon as i can get the turbo diesel out of my transit and 24v in, mondeo already on LPG so i use that for most long runs and just stick £20 diesel in the transit when and if i need it,

anyone living or know anyone living in the country can use heating oil, my mates dad always uses heating oil in his modernish cars and has no problems, and that stuff is cheap, think he mixes it with diesel at about 50/50, i think you could run it neat but that would have to be looked into.

i was in somerfields up here yesterday, and the veg oil shelf was empty, all but about 5 1ltr veg oils and olive oil, and justy the other day i lost my supply of veg oil, i used to take it away for nothing, now a bloke has gone in there and offered him 5 pounds for every 20 litre drum, the guy must be mad, because out of every 6 cans, 1 is more or less useless, and after sieving the others you get about 12/14 litres, by the time youve got the sh t out, so hes paying about 50 p a litre or something for what hell use, i cant see him doing that for long, unless it does reach the 2 pound mark, or more to the point it could become unobtainable, or very limited anyway.
